SUCCESS!

The console with serial number SW1278XXXXX and a UPC of 045496780043 had 4.5.0-10U on it!

Gonna return the 6.1 system.

Am I now the highest serial number confirmed with 4.5? I think 1270 was the highest according to the post linked a few pages back.

Interesting to note, when I set up the profile, the date had 2012 filled in, the 6.1 system had 2013. Might be a nice little early indicator before you even complete setup.

Unless anybody can find proof otherwise, I'm inclined to think that a UPC code of 045496780043 will guarantee you 4.x. Kinda interesting, as the one I got a couple months ago came with 4.4, not 4.5. Not too fussed, it saves me from having to rent a copy of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon again to update it to 4.5.

No, http://gbatemp.net/threads/where-to-get-a-firmware-4-5-or-below-3ds-xl.352360/page-22#post-4840751

I'm keeping the wiki up-to-date here for info on buying <=4.5.0 3DS's. I see no real benefit to going with UPC codes over serial numbers if they can both guarantee an exploitable 3DS.

You still have
For the Blue/Black 3DS XL: SW1270xxxx

Which is wrong since both me and the guy in that other post you linked have one above 1270.

The benefit to going with UPC codes is that it's a lot less variable, there are only a few UPC codes I have seen but there are tons of serials.

The guy I linked had a Red/black. I just updated blue/black to link to your post. The wiki is editable by anyone so if you see another error you can correct it freely.

I don't really see how looking for a specific UPC code is any easier than looking for a <= SW12xxxxxx x serial number, plus serial numbers are already a known quantity.

Actually I have 3ds xl SW1286 with 4.5 system firmware so i think that is still the highest serial number that I have seen so far hmm

I called Target the other day and put one of the supposed three stocked black XL's on hold. One hour later the one I put on hold was the only one left, locked up behind the counter. Got it on sale for $150. It's an SW40. I then went to Sears and bought a red/black SW12, and they even price matched, so I got them both for a total of $300.

Time for the transplant. I'll just resell the red and black one after Xmas, I'm sure I'll get my $150 back.

I recently bought the Monster Hunter 3DS XL Bundle in Europe - it was v4.5. Hope this helps :)

Not really. Give info on the Serial number would help.

Example of where recommending a bundle fails: reissued bundles for the holidays, these will have a later serial number and very likely a more recent 3DS firmware.

What seller was it? I might consider getting one from there if that same seller has blue ones.

And yes, all black 3DS XLs are 5.x or higher. Those weren't even out until after 5.x came out.

I'm going to check the local Best Buy to see if they have a 12 or lower serial number in stock, but I am doubtful at this point. :(

I know this is about US 3dsxl's but Just to clarify for other UK tempers UK all black can be 4.5 as i own one.

Probably not likely that any are still around though right? Maybe they are in the UK, but in the US they sell like hotcakes and there's no chance any store has the initial shipment of blackies in stock.

I'm kind of surprised that my nearest Sears still had SW12's. Next to nobody shops for video games (or anything else) at Sears these days, so it wasn't entirely shocking, it's why I went there in the first place, but they had at least 8 of them. Mostly blue, and one red/black. It's a good thing Nintendo released XL's in colors that people don't really want:P Personally I've never been a fan of colored electronics. They should be black, silver or tan. And I'll throw woodgrain in there or retro sake.

i think there probably are in the UK Nismax but yeah Nintendo scene in America is prob different. Seems like most of the Q's on this thread are from Americans hunting hard for a low firmware 3dsxl luckily its not the case here. Some of the bigger non specialist gaming stores snap up a lot of stock in big orders and hold it. Mine was sitting in a warehouse for most of the year. I know what you mean about coloured consoles, all black was my preference as well so i got lucky.

This would be 4.4 right?

Because it's a limited edition and all that jazz.

Yes, as far as I know. I know someone with one of those.

No, there are absolutely no black 3DS XLs in America that are on 4.x, don't even waste your effort looking for one. The black systems came out on August 11, 2013, long after firmware 5.x came out. If you want pure black that badly, you'll have to do a case swap.

I don't really see how looking for a specific UPC code is any easier than looking for a <= SW12xxxxxx x serial number, plus serial numbers are already a known quantity.

Because there are less UPCs than there are serials :P

It's not like it hurts people to post both... the more information the better if you ask me.

A week ago I ordered a 3DS XL from amazon through a retailer . I received it today but I was disappointed because it was a black 3DS XL with firmware 5.1 and The serial was SW129.
I ended up taking a regular 3DS with firmware 4.4.

Yo guys. I have a few questions. I'm going to my local Gamestop tomorrow to buy a refurbished Cosmo Black 3ds (not an XL). I know the cosmo black and the aqua blue were the first 3ds's to be released in America. I checked online to see if they have a few black 3ds's in stock and so far they only have 2 available. My questions are:

1) What are the chances of them being in a Firmware lower than 4.5?
2) On some 3ds's (such as the one I have now) the serial number starts with CW instead of SW, should I be worried about that?
3) I know at Gamestop they won't let you check the firmware without buying the system, will they allow me to exchange my 3ds without bitching if the firmware is too high?

*My local Gamestop is usually not busy compared to other stores in my area, so hopefully I land the right 3ds on the first try.

1. 100% if you find a 3DS with a 2011 printed on the back. If your looking for a XL/LL then it is alot lower.
2. Bundles come with CW, if I remember correctly
3. Use target or walmart. They tend to have the serial numbers visible from the glass case sometimes. Or you can just ask to pick through the ones on display for the right one you need.

Gamestop sells refurbs if your looking through the case, those have a higher probability of being on a firmware you can't use a gateway or r4 clone to rund 3DS games. Unless you know the people working there asking them what models they have will be harder.
