Yep, this is real thanks to Bean and Chadderz have modified Mario Kart Wii with the browser exploit. Custom tracks are closer than they appear.

More progress has been made!

Even more:

What does physics mean?

I like the cold:

I like it long:

Here we go again:

I will probably have this in my own CTs:

Using the shortcuts is kinda cheating your way to the first place.
Why? Because someone actually knows how to play? LOL.

If this really is real (that it can modify more than meaningless text or audio), it's just going to be like every other time online play gets ruined by cheaters, some k00l sc33n morons releasing things they shouldn't. One has to wonder why all these "scene" losers always love to ruin things.

ITT: A likely Photoshop of a stage name is passed off as a "game hack".
If you watch the entire thing it actually looks believable :). According to the description on youtube a kernel exploit has been found, which could mean homebrew isn't too far off ^^

These aren't just some nobodies trying to pass it off, they've got dev experience with custom MKWii stuff. I still think it's a bit of a jump from modifying one game on one console, to gaining complete control over another console, but I can see it being true. Some more evidence would of coursebe nice, and I'm sure it'll come in time. :P

And according to the uploader, they aren't planning on releasing any more of their work than is necessary for MK8 mods. Wouldn't hold your breath on them being the savior of public Wii U homebrew.

I always use the shortcuts because it makes it easier for me to reach 1-3 spots but it's somewhat unfair to those who stay behind.

How is knowing the track unfair to anyone in a race? Isn't that the whole point? Getting to know the track and the racing mechanics in order to be competitive and win? You don't have any advantage at all, all the players have an equal chance at getting to know the track, it's just that some know it less than others.

Whoa! They have experience with a prehistoric platform that a LOT of people do as well! That proves they're trustworthy and proves that they hacked a previously untouched console thoroughly!

"Homebrew" (aka piracy and online cheating) can kiss my ass. There's plenty of more convenient/powerful consoles or platforms to develop emulators or indie games for. People want "homebrew" to pirate things or cheat in games.

Apparently they had a stream where they changed the names to requests made live in the chat, so eh.
Because it's not like it's possible to edit a video as it's happening or anything...

Yeah, you'd need some mad (aka inhuman) photoshop skills or a pretty cool script to just randomly change fonts on a live stream. ;)

Or, y'know, they just want homebrew on the machine they like. Although to be fair, the amount of users actually interested in homebrew games and apps is quite small.

Considering the average stream is practically stop-motion and in potato quality, not really.

Okay, I'd love to see you do it then. It's one thing to add an overlay of crappy explosion effects and cliparts, completely another to edit all of the on-screen fonts and make it seem "legit" when you're going live.

Hey, I'm Chadderz, I'm the one on the computer in the video.

It may seem a bit of a leap from game moders to console exploiters, but someone has to gvie it a go! Since we've mastered MKWii I felt MK8 was the logical next step. What I created is an exploit which upgrades permissions from user mode to supervisor mode on the Espresso core, thus allowing us to break down the isolation between the browser and the game and directly change stuff. The livestream was done several hours after I first did this, so hence all we showed were really basic obvious tricks like text mods.

As we stated we're against piracy and against cheating so don't expect us to be releasing any of that, but we do want to see a return of custom content to both MK8 and other Wii U games.

People interested in "homebrew" games (aka indie) have a great number of good platforms for development. Emulators? Horribly inaccurate emulators (the Wii ones come to mind) are pointless, besides, pretty much any device nowadays seems to be capable of emulation...

What you don't realize is that by revealing any information about what you're doing, and especially considering this concerns game-modding, you're giving bad people hints or outright telling them how to do certain things/where to be looking for vulnerabilities/etc.

What I'm seeing so far in this thread, *bitch, bitch, bitch* *Mods will be used for cheating* *Mods WON'T be used for cheating* *Video is fake and has been fabricated* Let's see, what else did I forget to cover?

Who the hell cares? Don't be so effing bitter about this. No wonder people don't want to release their hacks, because of attitudes like yours and the fear-mongering that's spread from said attitudes.

Boo freaking hoo, so people want homebrew, sorry, but it can't be stopped. Gonna happen whether you like it or not. Grow a pair and get used to it :P
