Finally got my Wii U a couple days ago and I finally got around to softmodding it. I used smashstack to install the homebrew channel and then used this guide for the ios's. I'm using the same SD card from my Wii, so I already had my favorite USB loaders already ready to go.

Here's where my problem came in. When I use USB port 0 (The only one I'm supposed to use) my harddrive makes a quite audible clicking noise. At first I thought it was just my harddrive failing, so I went and tried my brothers Wii game harddrive, and the same thing happened; it the drive starts spinning, but before it get to full speed, it just stops and clicks, then repeats. Neither of them do it in any of the other USB slots on the Wii U or my computer. My assumption is that that USB port isn't giving enough power.

Through more testing I've concluded that I can't use that specific USB port on the Wii U side either; the same thing happens.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Use the USB "Y" cable to draw more power from the second port, all portable usb harddrives come with this common cable:

None of my 3 USB harddrives came with this cable. It never even occurred to me that this would be a thing. Regardless, I'm fairly sure this is my problem and I'm completely sure that I can purchase one of these on amazon for fairly cheap. Thank you.

Will report back with results when cable comes.

I had the same issue and the Y cable I ordered fixed it, so you should be set :)

I dunno, all my external HDD's had external power to them... And, generally, a clicking hard drive = your shit is failing. Does it click when you plug it into a PC?

if you read his message he said he doesn't have this problem on the computer but yeah if your hard drive is clicking its either not enough power or failing.

Sorry for taking so long to update. Truthfully I sorta forgot about this thread. I just found it in my bookmarks and decided to be a Good Samaritan and report my results for anyone who's looking for it in the future.

The Y cable did indeed fix it. Just wasn't getting enough power.

Thanks for the help :)
