So I managed to score a 1.1.0 3DS on Kijiji the other day, and I'm going to be paying for it next week. I'm thinking on doing the SD NAND mod to back up the 1.1 NAND so I can downgrade to it whenever, however, I'd like to try doing something different as a workaround, if that's possible. What I'd like to do, is set up an emuNAND, then take the emuNAND that the Gateway launcher made (That would have 4.X), and replace it with the 1.1 NAND (Mostly for the OK GO video) I made manually.

Has anyone tried this, and would something like this work properly? Or would the emuNAND break catastrophically?

That's not gonna work. Gateway needs 4.1-4.5 to work, and what you would be doing (if I understand you correctly) is updating your system NAND to 4.5, then setting up emuNAND, then replacing that new emuNAND with the system NAND you copied before you updated to 4.5. That's just asking your 3DS to explode on you.

It might work.
Gateway's emuNAND uses a modified 7.X firmare which seems to work fine for 4.0-7.0. Who knows if it'd work for 1.0.
If it doesn't you'd need to decrypt your firmware and relaunch into the 1.0 firmware.

Seems like the gateway launcher needs to specifically support the emunand version, and it won't support the older version. Then again, you might as well try it, if you've got the hardware mod anyway you're not likely to kill anything permanently (this is not a guarantee).

Edit: also I don't know what the Ok Go video is. Is it awesome?

i'd think absolute worst thing that could happen would be the system would more or less blow up and the SD card would need to have the emunand replaced. It's an interesting idea...let us know how it goes.

Well yeah, but the sysNAND will stay on 4.X. If the emuNAND can be updated to even the latest of firmwares, why has nobody tried downgrading it then? It should still (partially) work in theory, best case scenario it works perfectly.

But what makes u say that firm 1.1 is the same as 4.1 to 4.5? This could happen like the wii. Once you got past 4.x, you couldn't downgrade back.

Well yeah, you can downgrade if you have a NAND flasher on any 3DS, so there's no "point of no return" firmwares. (Someone was able to downgrade from 6.1 to 4.5).

But yeah, I'm not making any changes to the system when I'm using emuNAND, so if something breaks, I should be fine. It's almost like using a virtual NAND on the Wii - I'd have more room to store games on the simulated NAND because it's on the SD card, and if I break that NAND, I just don't have to boot it and I still have my Wii.

Ah I see. Yeah, with a flasher, it's like deleting and old NAND and put a new one. Ok then. Carry on. :D

You should not do that if you are able to do that the brick routine may brick your 3DS as the Gateway checks some crc in the firm. Also GW will always boot there firm form the Launcher.dat only the modules are taken from the emuNAND. Sorry you have to patch the firm yourself and make your own patches if you want to emulate the old firm.

I thought GW Omega didn't have brick code in it, but I suppose if there's a chance of bricking, it's a chance I'm not willing to take. I guess I'll keep the 1.1 backup for a rainy day then. Thanks.

GW Omega still has brick code but it is more hidden

Only people who are saying there is brick code is pokemon project members
Mathieul couldnt find any such code

It seems its only doing hardware checks now
And will not launch gateway mode without a gateway card inserted

I am fairly confident that there is no way this could trigger their bricking code. It only happens if you screw with the DS Profile ROP or edit their Launcher.dat. There's no form of a checksum on the actual NAND or anything.

well in there 2.0 b2 there was one check that triggered the brick code in the firm code also there is a way to trigger that brick code in the menu in 2.1 (it is now better obfuscated in 2.1). There are also checks in the firm in 2.1 but I don't know where it ends as it is better obfuscated but I think it end up in the brick install.

add Better safe than sorry

As far as I know the Emunand is patched live when you launch it, in a non-persistent way. Downgrading sounds like the patches will break in some way or another (anyone remember 7.1 on gw 2.0b1? Many things didnt work properly).

In the odds that you do brick you can still attempt to unbrick as you have a hardware mod anyway. Of course, they could've changed how they brick the console, possibly making the current unbrick solution useless.

I'd say this is at the very least an interesting experiment ^^

PS: Don't quote me on anything in this post, I haven't done any research myself and am just sharing what I've heard.

as far as I know the brick method is still the old.
