My friend says the best place to get them is on Ebay. I see one listing up for $200. Is he right? Is eBay the cheapest/most reliable?

I bought mine from eBay, but $200 bucks is on the high end of what they go for usually. I got a very nicely cared for used one for around $170 with shipping in December. Concentrate on sniping the ones up for auction instead of the buy it now ones (unless you find one less than $190 which was the usual ending price for most decent ones.)

Others have had good luck at local pawn shops as well.

Try "3DS firmware." Some people do not put Gateway in their listing. You will have to be mindful though that it will pull up some firmwares that are higher than 4.5, but you will get a more complete listing search usually.

Your country isn't listed, but I've found (here in Australia at least) that local pawn shops normally have a few XLs and dont mind you checking the firmware yourself. More local online classified ad sites are good also.
I picked up a 4.1 grey XL yesterday from cash converters for $180, one tiny scratch on outer casing but otherwise perfect condition.

If ebay is easiest then I'd look for any that dont come with any recent games and just message all the sellers asking. I came to curse pokemon because so many came with it and you knew the FW would be too high.
If the listing is 'buy it now' and the seller updates the details with it being FW 4.5 or below after you ask, it's likely to be gone really quick.

Search terms that will find a few: '3ds xl firmware', '3ds xl gateway', '3ds xl 4.5', but those will mostly turn up listings from sellers who know why sub 4.5 is valuable and are asking for more money because of it.

I can vouch for eBay too. It cost about $156 used. Cheaper than Gamestop's $190 used and refurbished (don't know why both used and refurb are same price). IMO if the the price on eBay differs less than $10 from Gamestop I'd just go to Gamestop because the time you have to wait for the shipping you could have the system the same day at Gamestop. You just have to check to make sure it is 4.5 and below.

i payed 100 for mine... it was advertised as not working due to sd card slot being jammed...I took the back off and took some pliers and pulled it out and it was fully functional and looked pretty good so 100 bucks for a 3ds xl wasn't bad at all..id recommend searching the broken section of the 3ds xl consoles if you know ANYTHING about the insides

Just sign up for deal sites and wait for 3ds deals... I don't like eBay stuffs, because you never know what seller actually did to the systems when they're advertising as NEW.

Actually, eBay is a pretty reliable source when you are looking for specific firmware versions. They all have pics (even the new ones usually) with the system on so that you see the firmware version. Granted that it's not 100%, but you can get some excellent condition systems on the cheap (mine looked like it was practically new except for the fact that it had a replacement stylus.)

Great going. Sounds like you got a good deal. Congrats!

I bought mine from RealHotStuff.com and had a great experience. They are also one of Gateway's authorized retailers.
