*Its not for Steam, its for UPlay*

I guess that's something the later games do? I own the first one on Steam and didn't have to that AFAIK
I don't have the first game on PC. But all other AC games on Steam will launch Uplay, which in return launches the game.

It's the reason why I moved AC games to my PS3. No need to deal with other DRM.

PS3 and XBOX version have UPlay built into the game.
The PC UPlay isn't terrible. It uses one-time verification and only needs to be running in the background if you want the "Actions" and "Rewards" activated. [IMO I think this is a much better system than achievements]

Console version only use Uplay if you decide to play online or collect rewards.

PC version of Uplay isn't bad, but I simply don't like third party DRM beside Steam. Uplay for PC is always running on background though. It only needs Internet for initial one-time activation (after which you can switch to offline mode).

Yes, that is what I meant. Sorry for the bad typing :P. I was trying to get the point across offline is available after initial activation. Yes, it runs in the background but thankfully it is a low-resource consumer unlike Origin.
