The Kinect is a truly wonderful piece of technology and a truly terrible game peripheral.

I wouldn't touch it with a five foot pole. To be fair, that's mostly because it requires a distance of 6 feet.

Don't get me wrong - it's a good, fun accessory, but it's just an accessory. By bundling it with the system Microsoft tries to force developers and users alike to use it, and as much as the Kinect is innovative and opens new possibilities in gameplay mechanics, forced innovation is not a good idea. Sure, using the Kinect during standard gameplay as an add-on is a neat idea, but that's an add-on, it's optional and it's hardly a necessity. Many users don't feel like dishing out a $100 for a peripheral they will literally never use. One of the very first complaints about the XBox One that surfaced on the web was "Can we please disconnect that thing?" - not all users want it, so practically they're paying an extra $100 for a black plastic brick they never even asked for in the first place.

Why the Kinect has such a negative stigma attached to it.

Kinect is by no means a deal making/breaking feature but people keep thinking it is. That's why they get upset when it isnt. Its a fun add-on that increases the fun you are already having. 10% of the people who hate the Kinect hate it because of how inaccurate the first one was, combined with the fact that the games it supported were between subpar and average. Also it had limited range for it to work so if u didnt have a big living room to use it in, then you were kinda outta luck. It was basically a gimmick you only brought out at parties like monopoly or Jenga. The other 90% of people who talk crap about Kinect have never seen or played with it in their lives. They are going off of word of mouth of their friend's friends's cousins brother. Recently because of all the NSA bullshit, people are using it as an excuse to say Kinect is invading their privacy so its "Unconstitutional" Like the government gives 2 shits about 12 year olds playing call of duty...

Why the Xbox One Kinect Is drastically different from Kinect 1.0.

The Kinect made back in 2010 and 2013 are completely different. The first one was designed by Primesense, while the second improved Kinect was made In-house by Microsoft. They have drastically improved it with a 1080p camera (fucking beautiful) , a wider range of integrated voice controls, infrared sensor, facial recognition (OPTIONAL, you can turn this off if you think the nsa is out to get you) and the ability to multitask among other things. Even people with small bedrooms can use the kinect now as its field of vision is easily twice that of the first version. When the Kinect voice commands work, they fucking spoil you rotten to the point that you only touch your controller when playing a game. want to watch tv, boom it will even bring up a tv guide. Want your xbox to record your gameplay (last 30 seconds) boom it can. Want to redeem a code without typing in a bunch of random letters boom, it has a QR reader. The only reason people should hate on Kinect right now is because there are no good games available for it yet. Thats it.

The kinect is fun while drinking but it does require quite a bit of room and doesn't work near as good as its advertised. I have a kinect and got a few good hours out of Kinect Adventures and Fighters Uncaged but it didnt take long for me to get sick of it. Its kinda like board games, there only really really fun when friends/family are over and bored.

As someone with An Xbox one I can confirm that the Kinect is still pretty terrible.
I mean, It may just be that I don't have a very spacious Game room but seriously, I can be like 5 feet away from it and it doesn't recognize what I say, the motion capture is VERY shaky too the point that at times it just doesn't work, and above all as cool as it is, it just doesn't work out the way it needs too. I wanna love it but I freaking hate it.

Yes, Microsoft is innovative see. They had to design this hardware because they had so many games in mind that they could not realize without it. Alas, we have finally be granted a video game experience like no other. Thank you Microsoft for paving the way once more. First you invented multi-tasking (snicker snicker) and now this. What will they surprise us with next?!?!?!

This is the most important point.
I think it could be incredible.
But I guess it still isn't.

I've done some testing with the game.
While it has some motion recognition issues sometimes (albeit actually very minor) it has worked surprisingly well. It's a fun party game sure, nothing to get all worked up about though.

I will say that I had to make quite a bit of space before I started playing though. I even had to push some small objects and furniture back a little because the Kinect was picking up on them as well as me and making the motions all funky.

I'm sure they'll update it and patch some stuff accordingly but at least the Kinect is making the effort.
Albeit a very small, struggling effort...

your arm is shorter than 1 foot?

wouldn't that be anatomically incorrect? i mean i can't imagine myself with arms shorter than my own foot, but after thinking a while i had seen clowns with really big shoes and maybe they are longer than my arm but...

Apologies for rezzing the thread, but I've been wondering...why didn't they invest $$$ into a few studios, to develop kinect-centric triple-A titles? Show up at E3 saying "This is kinect 2.0, and THIS is why you NEED to have one! Epic games you can't experience anywhere else"

Relying on 3rd parties like that, when you'll know they'll say "Well...we COULD make kinect integral...but why do that when it would making porting a nightmare?"

Id love for something like this, but unfortunately its usually too mch of a hassle to try and do. I mean, going off my above post, Kinect Sports rivals was to be the game that would take full advantage of everything kinect had to offer, which was a game developed my Micrsoft themselves, and still failed in some ways to deliver on the fluidity of motion controls. Until Xbox can perfect its readings and design, I dont think we will see anything anytime soon. Unless E3 has some secrets.
