Hacking How can anyone be okay with Gateway's behavior?

^Pretty much this, no question. I own a gateway cart, but to say that I approve their actions would be lying. .

I do too, but all I ever wanted out of it was the ability to play games without region locking. Ever since this whole bricking thing started, I haven't touched the Gateway or used my 3DS with GW's launcher, modded or not.
Sucks 'cuz I have a copy of Animal Crossing that I downloaded from the e-shop on my EmuNAND which I can't use because of all of this.

True, without flashcards, there's no game modding no homebrew no translation patches no save backup etc.
But honestly, we survived the 80's 90's and early 00's without backup devices.
Only for disc based games, some used a second memory card to back up saves.

Homebrew has existed since the beginning of home computing in the 70's. Backup & cheat devices existed in the 80's, there was the Wild Card for the Apple ][, the Happy Card on the Atari 8bit, and the Power Cartridge on the C64. Since the 80's you also had dialup BBS based forums, the discussions were not too different from those you read here today. In the 90's Datel made hardware based cheat devices for just about every popular game console, some of these could be used for the creation of homebrew. There was also the Doctor V64 which made backups of N64 game cartridges and provided a platform for homebrew development.

What else is commonly known as "they were bad"? I mean sure, you could use something like the soviets, but that wouldn't have fit what I was saying. Basically, I wanted to use something known as despicable, and use it to label gateway.

Honestly, I'm glad Pokemon came out when it did and I decided to go legitimate. I don't even have to worry about this kind of stuff anymore.

Let's bring in an example: Hitler took over a wide amount of countries faster then anyone else to date. Now, just because they (being Wehrmacht) were the first to do it, doesn't make what they do okay. Point in case Gateway, just because they were first, doesn't make what they do okay.
(That was worded badly, I was actually going to aim at more of a Nazi example, but Hitler is just as good)

Honestly, I'm glad Pokemon came out when it did and I decided to go legitimate. I don't even have to worry about this kind of stuff anymore.

If it wasn't for everything happening in the Python 3DS thread I would've gone legit by now too, I've got monster hunter fire emblem and animal crossing, as well as like 5+ other e-shop titles i cant plpay (Old 3ds wasnt hackable and broke, new one is 4.3)

I totally hear you. Importing kind of sucks as it's pricey as balls, but for me, I actually take a lot more gratification in playing games that I purchased out of my own wallet. I used to pirate a lot more than I care to admit, but as a result only like 10% of my games got finished. When it came down to purchasing, my completion rate was always spot on. While I love hearing of the new developments these teams continue to throw around, seeing things like this makes me just a tad worried.

Everything in this thread has already been said before in the last thread......and the thread before that....it gets to a point where you just have to make crap up to bear seeing all the same old analogies and OOOMGGGGGG posts !!!!!!!!

I'm not taking sides here, but I think this is the reason why Gateway chose to brick consoles and not the flash carts:

Say Gateway instead chose to brick the cart. Person who bought the R4 or Orange or 3DSLink or w/e would just think that they got a DOA cart or it just stopped working. That person would just go and return their cart if under warranty or buy another R4/3DSLink/Orange if theirs was over. The clone cart would brick again and the customer repeats this process ad infinum. This would cause the clone companies to get more sales and Gateway would end up promoting their competitors.

Since the other companies cost so much less, if people didn't buy Gateway before, they probably never will especially if their clone cart fails. They'll think that all carts would have the same chance to fail and definitely wouldn't spend more money on different brand. Gateway realizes that the clone customers will never be their customers so they might as well stop the clone customers from supporting the clones if they don't have a 3DS at all.

I can see why they chose this route. I hope that makes sense.

im ok with what gateway did about the brick bit. but im not ok with the customers 3ds getting bricked. I mean you had people working long hours to ensure that the firmware was working flawlessly wouldn't you want some kind of protections so someone cant come in and steal it change a couple things and sell it to make a profit without even really putting forth the effort to create their own firmware. but the problem is everyone is mad at gateway for having that protection in their launcher.dat file. but they should be mad at the clone card makers for stealing the firmware from gateway claiming for their own. that goes to show who people should and shouldn't trust. so people that are using clone cards that stole work from gateway to make a profit they are the ones that the people with bricked 3ds should be going after not gateway.

Look, am I a little worried my 3DS might get bricked right now? Sure after all this uncertainty and rumors that are floating around, I would be too. But so far my 3DS is fine. If and I mean IF Gateway bricks my 3DS, I will MAKE IT MY MISSION TO TAKE THEM DOWN. I will spam every forum to insult Gateway and warn users. But until that happens, they are the only people that know WTF they are doing on 3DS, and it seems to be working since NO legit users have been hit only clone users. They are the dominating force in 3DS hacking and keep showing it time after time.

Some people chose to be cheap and bought cards that were obvious clones of Gateway's work.
What is Gateway supposed to do? Ignore it and let their competitors steal market share and their designs?
A simple hey guys please support us wouldn't work, nobody would care.

I'm really glad this happened. Gateway will be selling more carts now that they are the only trustworthy people in the scene, which then translates to funding to work on compatibility and new features.
The only people I can feel bad for are those who wanted the cheaper option and didn't research where the design and work was coming from. Still Gateway should not be held liable.
They put code in their release for authenticity checking and someone stole the work and then resold it. If anyone is to blame it is the creators of the r4i3ds/3dslink.

Buying a Gateway to avoid paying for games is one thing but buying a cheap copy of a gateway to play downloaded games even cheaper is a whole new low.

Just goes to show how cheap/desperate some people really are. You asked for it! Sure it's a bit of a dick move as you could have a "friend" say borrow someone's card and get bricked or a 3ds that came with one from ebay or something.

I will say it again, don't be so damn cheap support the game developers and publishers and co and buy the games that you enjoy. After you finished with the games trade them with friends for other games or trade into the shop for other new games.
