I've noticed last night and tonight that Steam has been pretty damn slow. Constant refreshes and such on my end get me to where I'm going. But I just wrote it off. Rumor going around that Steam was hacked. At first everybody thought it was a simple DDOS attack, apparently not.

Valve sent out this email to some people (like Kotaku)

Here at Valve we work our hardest to protect our customers and their private information. We are sorry to inform our community at Steam that Valve databases have been breached. Currently, we are checking our databases to see if account information and credit cards have been confiscated. We will inform our loyal community directly within the coming hours. As for our servers, we are confident they will be back online by 9 P.M. PST.

We apologize for any inconveniences that this breached has caused among our community. Our team will be working hard to reverse damage that has been done to our databases.

It's unconfirmed if it's been hacked or if this email is real. Only just found out about it.

Seems someone got steamed that they didn't get all 10 cards to make the Snow Globe 2013 badge.

I have noticed no problems with Steam. No lag or anything.

Anyway, i'll wait for a actual announcement from Valve.

...So much for the PC Master Race. They're not immune to hacking like they seem to think they are.
Last I checked, that isn't the PC Master Race argument. The argument is that the hardware is superior, the customization is better, and the games are cheaper, yet play better.

On topic: Steam was down yesterday, but that was about it. I won't worry until Valve makes an official announcement.

That's ironic considering how long PSN was down for. A lot of game servers have been attacked the last few days. I know Star Wars: The Old Republic servers were the target of the Derphacking DDOS attacks earlier this evening.

Trolling? Yeah. I think Steam is just being hit by a DDoS or something. Either way they actually encrypt their databases so anything gained would be absolutely useless.

Everybody knows only macs are immune to hacking! and games

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:OS_X_malware , https://www.sans.org/reading-room/whitepapers/forensics/mac-os-malware-analysis-33178 and http://contagiodump.blogspot.de/2013/11/osx-malware-and-exploit-collection-100.html beg to differ just to name a few. (I think you meant that as the usual joke, just wanted to give others who have no background in IT security a glimpse at reality.)

@Topic:
There is no uncrackable system as long as it offers any kind of input interface (be it logical or physical).
It's just that some systems are more secure (better designed and verified) than others or not as widespread thus not a worthwhile target for "shovelware" style malware like selfdistributing worms.

And oh boy are big customer databases valuable targets...

p.s.:

Sorry can't hear you over the awesome dragon screech mod I use in skyrim I installed with four clicks in total.

Fixed.

No offense, but you really need to check the news more often. PC's are hacked pretty much on a daily basis (in fact: having a large group hacked pc's is one of the requirements of a DDOS attack). And it has been that way since forever. At best, consoles are a bit more prone to this because they're relatively new to internet and online shopping while on PC's, security is far more common-practice. But whomever said or thinks that PC's are immune to it simply doesn't know what he's talking about.

Steam was/is reportedly being DDoS'd by a few people calling themselves ctFtheCat and LARCENY. They've been taunting Steam users via twitter. Apparently it was originally in response to Derp Trolling's DDoS of Origin, now it's just to see how many people get "assmad".

>dragon screech mod
>not using the superior Thomas the Tank Engine dragon mod
Well, it's kinda embarrassing to admit, but I find items and machines which just have a face planted on them (thus not beeing anthropomorphized in any way (like transfomers or the items in disneys "Beauty and the Beast" are)) kinda creepy... Could be some sort of early childhood trauma, don't know for sure.
