If I put the adapter in my SD reader and then turn on my 3DS, I have a blue screen, which is expected and good.

Sorry then, I thought that's what he meant. Having it inserted, but not in the computer.

So I clicked "cancle" when asked to edit. The opened win32 disk imager. But nothing appears in the "device" drop down.

EDIT: Was able to get that to happen ONCE. Same error code each time I try and boot but it has never again stated "this must be formatted"

The wires ar pretty thin. As far as length, I'd say in total they are less than ten inches (25cm)

The wires can be 1 mile long, as long as they are not attached to the reader/pc or have a short.

Better than nothing But you had that popup with the same error code? O.o

EDIT: Have you tried to solder the wires directly to the sd, without those fan connectors?
Your wires in the 3DS may be too thick for this though...

I find them thick too.
The more thick, the more resistant they are and it can creates timing problem. maybe why it's randomly detecting the drive.

The wires are 22 gauge. Not sure I could go any thinner without using human hair!

Well ok so now it doesn't blue screen when NOT plugged into computer, but give same error (and no popup) when it is plugged in.

try thinner wires and shorter exiting out the other side. be careful with those wires as they can remove traces on the board. while on bluescreen plug in the usb in and out. turn on 3ds qith it in usb port and unplug and plug in. once you see formart option open win32flasher and cancel format. should populate a drive letter. i have had to manualy map drive letter once.

My bet is still on the SD adapter, I can't see much of the soldering in the picture. They may be soldered correctly to the pins but there could be a short curcuit if you close the sd adapter/move the wires etc. You could try to insulate them with some tape, that's never a bad idea

I think you are wrong It's the other way round.

As mentioned, I am not sure how I could get the wire any tinner (shoter maybe but thinner... it's as thin as it comes)

As far as things shorting with movement, wouldn't I be able to see that when I test with the multimeter? Sorry, not trying to argue, just understand.
And when you recommend insulating with tape, are you saying to try and tape each wire separately?

Just to make sure. You have to put the SD Card into the SD Reader before powering on.
Then after the 3DS has the bluescreen, plug the Reader into the PC.


Short/Thick = good
Long/Thin = bad
But the length is more important than the thickness. Also every solderpoint/connection adds some resistance.
EDIT: So thicker wires are better (Thin wires = electrons have to "squeeze" through => higher resistance) but thinner wires are better to solder.
You don't want to put 30 Amps through those cables (at least I hope so for your 3DS), so the thickness doesn't matter that much.

About the insulation. I meant insulating each solderpoint in the sd adapter seperately, so there is no possible way they could have a short.

I just tried to simulate plugging the device in. I disabled the card reader, plugged in the DS adapter, booted DS (got the same error code I have been getting all along), enabled the adapter...

Yes. That's a problem
The problem is that the SD reader has power, disabling it doesn't help with that problem.
I suggest you get an external usb reader and then we can look again

The SD card reader is needed for reading the NAND. You can't just plug the NAND into a usb port.

ok sorry then, I thought thiner was better for data transmission. (soldering a modchip in console, etc.)

i don't think some people understand what dumping and flashing via hardware means. it's not a 'trick' that nintendo can patch out, we have hardware access. it will work
