In a statement Microsoft said that those customers who had reported problems and were waiting for a replacement console would be provided "with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft studios."

Source : BBC

Cant use your disc drive , no worries download a game instead .. all sorted. The fact i would have to return a new device would far out weigh the joys of a free game.. then again it is 50 notes saving...

Doubt you or really anyone have to worry about it. It's more of a lottery for a free game than anything. Your odds are abysmal.
Nice of MS to do that though, for the few affected. Bit of a PR stunt, but free stuff is good stuff.

Entirely a PR stunt. This is a move that is meant to show "unlike our competition, we won't just standby with standard procedures for launch console problems. We're better." It's probably also a call back to their red ring situation years ago trying to say that, this time, they're on top of things. Regardless, it's still poorly done. See, this isn't good for, say, if your console doesn't work at all, or really, if it has any other crippling issue than the fact that the disc drive may not work. It's only good if you have a disc drive failure, as the intent is to keep you in the game with their return system that makes it so you don't even have to turn in your old system while waiting for the new one (since a broken disc drive makes your system essentially worthless for most purposes).

So, plus side:
+ You don't have to turn in your console before they send you a new one while getting a game to tide you over

Cons:
- It only covers a single problem of many that could occur
- It's an unnecessary PR stunt that is ridiculously see through and still manages to fail

Realistically, the fact that Microsoft feels it's necessary to try so hard is kind of sad. Last I checked, the majority don't expect compensation when they buy launch time hardware and they're part of the minority that got shafted by the luck of the draw.

Holy Crap this was blown way out of proportion :|
Sure it may be a publicity thing in some ways but its also then literally saying "Hey sorry your console is messed up, here's a free game to tide you over until you feel like turning in your system, and when you do, the free game will still be tied to your account for all the trouble you went through"
Jeez, can we tone down the M$ hate for a second and just let them do a decent thing for once? This isn't them trying to hard to make themselves look good, they didn't even publicize it like mad, this is literally them making up for some failed hardware which tends to happen with almost all launch consoles.
Holy hecky.

A PR stunt? Since when is anything any company does not a PR stunt? Free games from Sony after the PSN hack wasn't a PR stunt? The Ambassador Program from Nintendo wasn't a PR stunt to make up for such a quick price drop on the 3DS? It's silly the lengths people go to hate. Free stuff? Fuck you Microsoft for trying to make up for anything, ever!

Yeah free games, fuck those assholes.

...honestly I can't believe people can sit here and cry about it. Who cares if it's a transparent PR stunt. Some people get some free games...grab the pitchforks that's the last straw, amirite?

Misread the title as 'free games for broken bones'. Good job I double checked. Saved me having to hide any more bodies. The shed's getting full.

Seriously though, after all the trouble the 360's open tray error caused you'd think they'd have put more effort into the disk drive this time, surely?

Of course those are PR stunts. Who said they weren't? Why so angry?
