Hardware Is my PS3 too hot?

In my gaming room it is pretty cold, I guess 15 degrees Celsius. I played Dead Space for 2 hours and these are the values I got for the RSX and Cell:

Cell: 64°C
RSX: 68°C

I'm sure the values would increase beyond 70°C in the summer, perhaps reaching 80°C. Are these expected values?

Normal. Don't worry unless it reaches 80C.

No, my girlfriend is WAYYY hotter than your PS3. The temperature of the room must remain maybe 5 degrees cooler than your PS3. Just in case your system starts overheating, at least the hotness of the room won't hurt it.

Oh, OK. Should have known. Heh. For the time being, I'm keeping mine legit. The fact that it is a brand new super slim likely means it's not really hackable anyway....yet. Not really looked into hacking it though either. Money is not really an issue for me anymore, so I've stopped with all the piracy. Still, it would have been nice to be able to see the temps.

From what I know the Slim and Super Slim models shouldn't have any overheating issues. The old phat model does though (YLOD).

If you want to lower PS3 Slim temperature consider drilling some holes. PS3 Slim does not have decent amount of ventilation hole.

When playing it's very hot, but the most heat is when sunlight enter the room and hit the consoles, it cracks without playing (no, I don't have any other place to put it, only solution is to place a protector between the window and the console).

Those temperatures are perfectly fine. According to IBM, the CELL CPU has an operating temperature of 85 degrees celsius and due to its structure it's naturally "hot", it should be perfectly fine.

Like Foxi4 have said, high temperature is normal for PS3. But if you want to lower the temperature a bit, drill a hole like that YouTube video, then put a mesh sheet over it. You can lower about 10C with that menthod and keeps fan on idle.

I do notice my PS3 getting hot whenever I use it and figured it was of no cause for concern. At the same time, one would think that 85 Celsius is a potentially dangerous for any CPU to reach much less a console. Those are normal operating temps under load?

Those are completely normal operating temperatures for the CPU, that's why they're in the specs sheets. Silicone varies in temperature resistance, the CELL is very resistant to high temperature since it's hot by design.

CELL was originally designed to be used in supercomputer, so it does run hotter.

Back then one of the reason Sony removed OtherOS because it is cheaper to buy an array of PS3s and set them up as supercomputer than buying CELL blade severs (which Sony does make and cost 10x more expensive).

So that's the real reason behind Other OS's removal. Never heard that part of the story to be honest. I mean, again, not particularly concerned about heat, just curious as to the behind-the-scenes work of the PS3.

Some x86 CPU's have such a high operating temperature, it varies from model to model. The general consensus is that temperatures around 70-80 degrees are a reason to start worrying, but there are CPU's out there that can operate just fine with temperatures reaching even a 100 degrees celsius, like Intel i7 family. Naturally as the temperature increases, the performance decreases...but we all know that.

So that's the real reason behind Other OS's removal. Never heard that part of the story to be honest. I mean, again, not particularly concerned about heat, just curious as to the behind-the-scenes work of the PS3.

OtherOS had a fatal flaw allowing the user to elevate access to kernel-level and completely override the PS3's on-board OS - that's the exploit GeoHot used.
