I bought a Wii U this week and picked up Nintendo Land too. I cant get passed the opening curtains splash page though. The game hangs and forces a hard reset. Has anyone come across this problem?

You should return it to the store and say "I want a new copy; this one doesn't work."
Depending on the case, I would also take the Wii U to the store with the game ..for testing purposes (so you know if the new game will act better)

And have you downloaded all the WiiU updates?

I don't have a WiiU :( yet... And I'm not planning on stealing one from Best Buy either.

Yes, my Wii U is fully up to date. The game was bought brand new so it can't be the disc or could it?

In that case, take your game and WiiU to the store (if you bought both there) and ask to test a new game after explaining the situation. Since both, game and console, are new, there's no need to mess with it too much trying to get a fix ...simply get a new game.
