Hacking Question about Gateway save files and micro sd cards

Hello everyone! I received my gateway and I am really enjoying it! I have one question though... I'm playing a game on a 4GB micro sd card with no problems. I don't have another micro sd card and I want to play a new game. If I format the micro sd and add the new game, will the save of the other game be ok? Basically the question is where does the gateway save it's files, it hasn't been clear to me and I don't want to lose my save. I'm pretty certain that this question has been answered before but I can't find the answer and I don't want to risk it. Thanks in advance!

Although i am still awaiting a working card from the UK supplier. I believe that the save files get backed up to the 3DS System SD-card from what i have read, but you must press the home button and then "X" button to quit the game

As far as i can tell the Red gateway card emulates a standard card and the save is stored on the gateway card separately then written out to the system SD on exit so the MicroSD only has a ROM file stored on it. the microSD will not be written to in the 3DS/gateway at any time

Yes I had the exact same belief as you, but I opened the SD hard on my computer and I haven't found the save file (although I followed the home-->close sequence). I only see a file "(manynumbersandletters).sav" which may be it but it says that it has been modified on 17/9 but I have saved (with the sequence) a moment ago so it is 19/9... It might be the save file but I don't want to risk it!
EDIT: Now that I think of it, maybe it says 17/9 because that is when the save was created and that makes this thread completely noobish
If anyone can confirm it would be appreciated!

That number would probably match a md5 style hash of the rom for id purposes

-EDIT2 if the save file is named "00000000-00000000.sav" in this format then that is the rom files title ID which is stored in the rom header and displayed in the OSX card programmer tool
