I'm wanting to get an Xbox 360 and primarily use it for playing downloaded games, both 360 and original Xbox games. What type of 360 do you guys recommend that's the cheapest and easiest to mod for this purpose? From what I've researched, a Slim with Xkey is the way to go, I'm just not sure what type of Slim is best, or if it can run original Xbox games. I don't care about Xbox Live.

If you want to run original Xbox games, get a original Xbox.
Their super cheap and easy to hack + the HDD can be upgraded.

If you don't care about Live then I recommend getting an old Slim or late Phatty and RGH/R-JTAG it (it's not cheap)
That way you can get Original xbox games on the internal HDD and 360 games on the internal
Along with DLC and XBLA etc.
However, Xbox 1 games are emulated and thus are prone to having glitches.
A lot of games won't even boot.

Iirc with the hacked emu, you have about 40 orso more games that work.

Where would you recommend looking for an early Slim? I'd prefer a Slim because it sounds more appealing to have a quieter, less overheat-prone model with built-in HDMI. And why is RGH preferred over Xkey?

Ebay.
Best shot of getting a Slim that's old ;p
Look for a glossy black one with a MFR date of 2010.

RGH is preffered over an Xkey if you don't care about Live, you can't connect to XBL when you've got it hardware hacked ;]
Doing so will result in a ban.
If you do want XBLive then get an Xkey.

you could flash the drive and dual nand the box so you can have rgh and live :D

Even though this is a 15 day old thread bump. I recommend getting it RGH'd since you don't care about Xbox Live. Even if in the future you did care about some form of multiplayer you can set up LiNK for some system link games.

Some bad responses here.

Best version. Xbox 360 phat Jasper and do a jtag or rgh mod on it.

These can run both 360 and xbox games from any media you plug in to it.

Original xbox is junk, only buy it if it is super cheap. It sucks though. I own two of them. I don't even use them.

Don't forget that a Dual NAND costs a pretty penny + you need to know what you're doing since a ban is REALLY easy to get.

Personally, If one would only want to play backup games then I recommend getting an Xkey.
Far simpler then setting up a RGH and maintaining it.

And why is a Jasper 360 better than a Slim 360? Just curious.

EDIT: From the cheaper aspect perhaps. I was able to pick up a few Slim systems for $100 each so I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a cheap one.

Phat is easier to disassemble for sure.
In terms of RGHing both 360's are equally good.

Best RGHable 360 is the Falcon as I had nothing but extremely good results with it.
Me own Falcon boots first glitch with stock wiring on the first revision of the Coolrunner.
And I have to say that I didn't do a really good job at soldering it in either.

But if you want to play Xbox 1 games, best is to get a original Xbox console.
360 emulates the old Xbox so graphical glitches etc are unavoidable.
As well as games that just refuse to boot.
Darkwatch is one of them along with Hello kitty Roller Rescue.
HK Roller Rescue boots perfectly on a hacked emulator tho..
No idea why MS scrapped it.

A major detail has been glossed over here. Which will also be more reliable? I would go for a later model that was much less prone to RRoDs. I have had two Falcons that have been very problematic. I would go for a Jasper if/when I need a new one.

I have never owned a slim so I can't say anything good or bad about one. Personally I don't like the slim but that is just me.

My jtag has a hitachi 0078fk in it and I forgot what that makes it be. But it isn't a jasper. It works. probably will rrod one day but I rarely use it so that isn't exactly happening. would just need re-bga to fix it anyways. I haven't touched 360 in over a year but some day I might snag a game or two for it and run it again. I'm more interested in picking up a Wii U at some point and playing some tank tank tank on it but other than that not really doing a whole lot with gaming these days besides some 3ds.

My jasper is factory sealed.. gonna hawk it on the bay when it is collectable. I have another 360 but I can't jtag it because the fuses are blown.. not sure what I can do with that thing. it can play backups.. banned from live (who cares, less kids to deal with but then why am I on here?) And maybe it can be rghed these days who knows. it is the same model as the one I jtagged.

Hitachi drives..
Prolly a Zephyr.
Unlucky if it's a Xenon.
Both are shit consoles since their known to RRoD.

Just kick the fans to 90% or so in FSD and you should be good on it.

Also, I agree on the Slim tho.
I don't like it that much either.

Well I haven't had any issues with either of my zephyrs... so they are fine. but like I said they can be reballed.. andthere's a guy that does it local to me for 50 quid.... probably a waste of money i dunno.

Slim trinity, I want to say September of 2010 and earlier. I've never had any issues there, it is easy to read nand with spi flasher, easy to apply dual nand and glitch chips, and is a great design. You can get newer slims but they might not be as easy to do. I traded my glitched slim Trinity for a Wii U. Good and bad really, lol.

Avoid fats, lol. Early slims, glitch 1, all set. Had 5 seconds each boot. Never played beyond this as my setup was great.
