Pokemon BW2 is not region locked. Any DS, regardless of region, can play any DS game regardless of region. Likewise, all Pokemon BW2 save files are interchangeable regardless of region.

And you're right that the US and EU versions are practically identical.

all my pokemon games are european

so will pokemon BW2 (US) work with my Gen IV and Gen V EUROPEAN GAMES?

The English versions are not region locked, I think the French versions aren't either.
Not sure about the other languages, but Japanese ones are definitely region locked.

(When played on a DSi/3DS, of course.)

If you're referring to importing Pokemon from your Gen IV games to your Gen V games, any games you use must be the same region as your DSi/3DS if that's what you're using. If you're using a DS, it doesn't matter.

Yes, as far as I understand it, only the Gen IV game (HeartGold) has to be retail, and HeartGold isn't region-locked.

Trading and battling is completely region-free.
