Right, I have a "hacked" PS2 memory card which I did myself years ago and recently found it, I burn my fav PS2 game (Patched etc) FFXII Zodiac Job System with ENG patch, and I go try them both in my sisters Slim PS2 (7xxetc 3 model) and it worked.. even the opening cutscene never played at like 1fps like it used to do on my old ps2... so.

I go to take the PS2 upstairs to play when I notice my older fat ps2 and decide to see if it still has life in it, only having the card and the patched game with me I use them.. It's a no-go captain...

"Huh that's weird" I say to myself.. thinking it must be a now dud PS2..

I set up the slim and get ready to game... Flickery flickery colours of ESR (Yay it's working I say to myself)...and what felt like years of blackscreen later.. it clearly somehow doesn't work anymore..

Have I missed something or did the slim die for ESR related stuff as well somehow?

What version of ESR is it?

EDIT: You said you hacked the memory card years ago. You may want to update it to the latest version of Free McBoot which (I think) has ESR version 9b.

It's 9B, I remember it orginally having the gui version or something first but I then changed it to the direct version..

The Disk btw is a proper Verbatim - R burned at 8x...

I had a really difficult time with ESR games until I replaced my laser. I would get the color screens and then freeze sometimes too.

It cost like 6 or 7 dollars from ebay and was pretty quick and easy to swap out.

One thing to do is use the ESR GUI and see if it recognizes the disc or not before trying to launch it. I would get unknown media tons before I replaced the laser.

Yeah I don't have the Gui anymore, any way to uninstall and reinstall ESR to get it?

Edit.. Just tried the first disk I burned again and it worked.. this time twice.. but when I put in the one I burned from a different PC at a slower speed (6x I think) it does the flickery flickery colours then never ending black screen again.. thinking it was a bad burn this time I put in the first again but it did the same again.. even tried in another PS2 and it did the same for both...

I got the GUI when I installed the FreeMcBoot Noobie package. Just reinstall that and you should have it.

Yeah I've done that now, but I've now tried both of the burned disks into 3 completely different PS2 I have and it all does the same stuff.. Flickery Flickery colours.. never ending black screen.. surely the lens on ALL of them are not so worn out.. something has to be up.. Considering they worked for a brief time..

Once I have it working I'll never turn off the PS2, not making that mistake again :P

If all of them have the original laser than maybe. PS2 was notorious for disc read errors often reading certain type of media and not others.

Before I swapped my laser my Ps2 was reading pretty much all my games (PS1 and PS2) just fine but was having trouble with ESR games and audio CD's (which only worked if perfectly clean and scratch free it seemed). The ESR games ranged from never worked, to worked 75% of the time, to worked 5% of the time, with the new laser they always work.
