Hacking Well damn, I think need Y-USB cable (another solution?)

Already have a 2.5" 500 GB HDD, all I need is a Y-cable if I ever wanted to use Dios Mios on a vWii esp now that you can bypass the HDD format checks by holding B during boot up. I refuse to buy a 3.5" just because it has an external power source.

You can always use a powered usb hub to supply the extra power. plug the data end of the HDD into the wii U and plug the power part of the Y cable into the powered usb hub.
It seems the usb ports on the Wii U dont supply the full 1amp of current that usb ports are supposed to have.
Hard drives require alittle more power when they spin up.
I have tried several hard drives using a 2.5" Usb to sata enclosure. all of the drives are not able to spin up. with the Y adapter they spin up.

can't you just plug both ports into the hub (haven't tried myself) if it can use the HDD through the hub, wouldn't be any real point in taking up the other actual port on the system

I went out and bought a 1TB seagate expansion drive. While the drive is self powered (2.5" formfactor) it does not play friendly with the wii u out of the box. Currently I have a card reader with built in usb hub connected to the wii u with an additional power only usb cord. With the extra power going to the drive it is stable and playing friendly. I ended up ordering an eForcity y cable for usb 3 from Amazon.ca. Came to about $6 and some change with standard shipping. Should be delivered in the next week or so. I personally went with the portable drive for space saving and to eliminate an extra power adapter in my entertainment corner, far too many power sucking devices already plugged in. As far as performance goes I notice a bit longer boot time on the system as it powers up and scans the usb drive, once loaded games take no longer to load from the usb drive than they do from disc or internal storage. All in all now that I have my drive working I am thoroughly liking the Deluxe Digital Promotion. I also like the fact that by downloading games I save even more space around the house, and the kids don't have discs to handle and scratch.

Indeed, you don't even need the Y cable for that matter. The powered USB hub should provide enough power to the HDD on one cable.
