I just bought a brand new 3ds xl, haven't even opened it yet. I ws wondering if any of the R4 cards work on the 3ds and if there is anywhere reputable to purchase. Thank you for reading and any advice you may have

Yes - there are.

R4i Gold 3DS is the best R4 card out there right now, with compatibility up to 5.1.0-11 in firmware. Ver.6 firmware update is coming soon.

Best option period - is the Supercard DSTwo. For about $20 extra, $40 total, you can get the SC DSTwo.

DSTwo allows you to emulate far more like GBA and SNES with the least amount of problems because of the extra processing hardware inside the cart. Supercard already has their Firmware fix out for 6, and they are very quick. Supercard has an excellent reputation. :)

Places to buy -

nds-card.com (official GBATemp sponsor)
realhotstuff.hk
or my favorite - zhuzhuchina.com

These places are the highest recommended ones.

Say I forget that I have a Supercard and I update my 3DS XL. I decide to play on it and realize what has happened. Is there any chance of bricking?

Also, does it require me to downgrade my firmware?

No firmware downgrades possible, and as far as updating goes, listen carefully please :)

First wait until a fix has been announced.

DO NOT UPDATE 3DS FIRMWARE UNTIL YOU HAVE RE-FLASHED YOUR CART.

You will need to Flash your cart to the latest CART Firmware,

Remove your cart from your DS. after you powered the system off

and THEN turn it back on and update your 3DS.

Instructions in the thread I provided.

Nothing bricks. The 3DS just recognizes the flash cart and refuses to run it.

I've had an ex friend brick his flash cart by turning the system off during an update with the cart still inside. We tried every trick in the book to get it working again, but the card was toast. Retail games ran perfectly. It's a small chance, but I always recommend removing the cart before updating the 3DS itself in order to prevent any situations like this.

Heh, and you can brick a 3DS by cutting the power during an update, and a PSP, etc. Nothing to do with flash cart checks, it's just how the system works.

The PS3 added a caution for that and has a backup install it can restore from.

I'm experienced with this stuff, I just wanted to know if there was any risk. Seems easy enough though, so thanks for answering my questions. =]

So normally you need an older DS model (that still runs the cart) in order to update it, but the DSTwo is special and has a secondary update function that usually works (but should not be relied on).

You can't downgrade or rollback a 3DS's firmware at all yet.

Alright, cool. I like your Layman's examples. =D

I'll probably join the 3DS SuperCard crew in a few days time, so thanks for everything, guys. You guys were a big help.
