Would be interesting to know how long this exploit has been known and how many systems are affected.
If this flaw was around for a few years, then EA would have known about it in some way, but then that would have meant they did nothing about it. Let's all get on the band wagon and claim they knew and didn't fix it! *sarcasm* Anyways, if some of us have been affected, I stopped being affected when I reinstalled my OS from scratch. I just started over. No more Origin.
Problem is, you make your breaks, and EA is basically, repeatedly, throwing itself in front of a truck.
EA can't catch a brEAk? Darn.

Why? The new Sim City is fun.

let me say it this way... (I hope can say it right) let's see if everyone in usa buys gas for cars that is 2.99 a gallon for one day. then the next day those the gas station jacks up the price by 3.99 now then we don't drive for a damn day that would butt hurt the gas peeps of getting there money... so think about it. getting a classic just for old time sakes or just getting this new one?

It'd help if you spoke an ounce of english and used an analogy that worked.

*facepalm*

well let me put in person A and Person B words then...

or spread out my post agian.... one sec... i'm trying to recall what someone said to me... and it failed has i was smacked to the ground.

Person A bought the classic Sim City 90's version. For PC or what ever the computer he's got .

Person B bought the new Sim City

Now if we were Person A and wanted to make piss off EA. we all should not buy what person B bought. just don't buy Sim City 2013 for one day. and let the classic take over. that's what i was trying to say.

...Why buy God of War 3 when God of War 1 is out?
Why buy Pokemon X and Y when there's Pokemon Gold and Silver.
Why buy a PS3 or a 360 when there's a PS2 and an Xbox.

In short...

your analogy is shit because you say people shouldn't buy a new game, and instead buy an old game.

Hacking the service and taking someone's info?

Oh, so that's what they meant by "Origin-al sin."
Sometimes, your puns are the highlight of my day, and this is one of them.

Also, ReVuln explains how this not specific to Origin, as Steam has the same set of vulnerabilities. Both have custom URIs, which are the vulnerabilities.

2.2 THE PROBLEM
As we have demonstrated for Steam9 in our previous paper, Steam Browser Protocol Insecurity 10, almost the same design problem applies for Origin. The Origin platform allows malicious users to exploit local vulnerabilities or features, by abusing the Origin URI handling mechanism. In other words, an attacker can craft a malicious internet link to execute malicious code remotely on victim’s system, which has Origin installed.

Actually he's just saying that People shouldn't buy shit games, simply because they're shit and not because they're new.
Then maybe, and just maybe, EA would realize what a bunch of bullcrap (Origin, SimCity 5, ...) they released onto the world.

And in this context the gas-analogy is perfectly fine. What do you think would happen if the whole of america wouldn't refuel their cars starting at 3am EST tonight? Maybe they'd jack up the price even more, but it's more likely that the price of $3.99/gallon would be lowered again, because the higher-ups would suddenly notice how much of a shit idea it was to raise the gasprice in first place.

It's called a boycott, boy.

I'm Canadian, we don't use Gallons so I have no idea what that equals out to.

Also, Origin isn't really shit. As Guild pointed out, EA wants in on the PC gaming pie. And from a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. EA now gets all the profits, they don't have to share it with Steam. If people want their games on PC, they'll buy them through Origin, and not anywhere else. And in turn, that makes competition against Valve and whatever other company, which in turn makes it better for us, the consumer because everybody will be trying to 1up and make the best possible experience.

Also, Sim City 5, again, not a bad game, really fun. The DRM and always online is dumb. The game is not.

I agree, but I am yet to actually play the game because I'm going to wait for a crack/mod/hack whatever to come out simply because my intrenet connection can't handle me playing online and everyone else in my house surfing the web, now back to Sim City 4.
Oh, and a gallon is 3.79 metric liters

Yeah, just saw that you're Canadian. I guess it's around 3,5 liters or something like that.

Maybe Origin is not shit, yet it stinks of sewage. Big time.
At least in the EU EA had same big trouble because of the Origin TOS and EULA. EA was practically forced by the community to eliminate/paraphrase some paragraphs in those.
And then again I had my whole personal problems with Origin. Whether it be that a Game couldn't be downloaded or that I couldn't move my whole Origin-Folder to another partition on my HDD/a fresh Windows installation or... .
Those are simply teething troubles, that a company like EA shouldn't have in their position against Valve. Especially not, when the final product feels like an alpha-version, that shouldn't be out in the wild at all.

And yes, I know from a beta/demo, that SimCity 5 isn't that bad, if it was for the game alone.
But you have the half-assed always online-DRM and dumb restrictions. Plus the fact that EA outright lied to the customers. This shit cobbled together into the final SimCity makes the game shit, until EA manages to clean this mess up.
Personally I don't think it's without any reason, that the game averages at 1.5 stars at the german Amazon-marketplace/that EA was being critizised that much over the course of the last week.

p.s.: I'm going to bed now, please don't be mad at me for not replying to you in the next few hours. :3

Can we please stop trying to relate this bug to some sort of karmic payback at EA? It's not like EA is getting shafted here, its consumers who could get viruses installed on their computers.

Plus its been said multiple times that a similar bug was found in Steam, but no one would say "THAT'S WHAT YOU GET VALVE" over that.

If ignorance is bliss then this thread would be pissing rainbows and vomiting sunshine.
