Hi there,
I know there are "many" tutorials how to root an Android Phone still I am not exactly sure about it yet.

Some tutorials seem like it is rather hard and dangerous ohters say to only use some tool like you do with redsnow for ios
than again some say your phone will be back to nothing after rooting other say nothing about it at all oO ...

So what exactly happens when you root the phone and what good does it do if getting games for free is not really my goal ... (there are some nice games but i don't like gaming without gamepad or keyboard)

So if I would root all my data will be lost ?

there are a few full wipe root methods but most of them are no wipe, it just depends on the phone

This completely depends on your Phone, rooting usually involves unlocking your bootloader one way or another, flashing a custom recovery and copying Superuser binaries to the System partition of your phone.

Why not just backup? For an unrooted phone you can use e.g. Carbon.

"Rooting" a phone means installing su and such to enable admin/root access. So it's like getting into an admin account on a PC instead of a limited user account, so you can change a lot more things.

Generally the process is as simple as installing the su binary (and an app to interface with it), but the binary needs to be installed in what is most often a protected area, which is why there's roundabout methods (depending on the device) for getting the su binary on there.

A good forum to learn more about rooting and how difficult it may be for your phone be berated at every turn is xda-developers.org
Seriously, I'm accused of being on a high horse at times, and even I think their regulations and such are incredibly out of touch with reality.

It's hard to find things (their forum structure was built by the mad hatter), rules are often outdated, updated info is midway through a thread instead of the first post being updated, etc... yet they insist on "look first", when most devices don't even show up on the forum list.

It's one of those forums where google searching the forum is quicker, easier, and finds more info opposed to actually looking at the forum list. XD

Depends on what is you're looking for. I, for example, have almost 0 issues with XDA as I'm usually only there for ROMs and rooting advice, both of which don't seem to have the issues you mentioned (or at least in my experience, but it's entirely possible that I just avoid shitty posters like that). Though I agree, google searching is definitely easier to get around and their structure does suck ass.

Yeah if you have one of the major devices the info's right there often, but for smaller devices you gotta' google the forum. XD

Why are you trying to root? are you trying to install apps that require it. If you are just trying to pirate apps then rooting is likely not required for your device, you just need to download apks and the data for the apps.

I want to install that open market thing as some apps seem not to be available in the appstore
but as far as I know I need to have my phone rooted to make those apps work.
