PS4 to Stream PS3 Games

so now Sony will have a huge buyback campaign to get enough PS3's hooked up to their streaming servers not to have to reprogram any games to be used this way.

better said, PS4 will just connect remotely to real, used and/or refurbished PS3's back at Sony's headquarters rigged for USB loading. :P

Why wouldn't it just support PSN games at launch? No need to add extra hardware. Besides, didn't Sony claim to be going with a more "innovative" route over more power?
If the PSN games are made specifically for the PS3 and it's CELL architecture, it's kinda like trying to get Wii games to run on the PS3 = wrong hardware.

Adding PS3 BC in this way at least makes it possible for newcomers and *gasp* kids, who get their first console after growing up a bit and being able to play games, to enjoy stuff from previous generations. I'd love to see it possible to have never ending backwards compatibility, but considering the PS3 is dirt cheap at the moment (sub 200€ easily), pushing PS3 BC on the new hardware could cost more than the 200€ in the MSRP/RRP. Some people here have praised OnLive for making it possible to run new games on old hardware and suddenly when Sony gives the same possibility (different hardware in this case), the bitching is never ending? I'd love to see other companies trying something like this. I don't see many possibilities of playing all the previous generations' games on other consoles due to hardware limitations..

I'm not really a Sony user, but I CAN see how this can be a good thing. But how they plan on executing this is where they usually mess up (like the jeers they got when they announced the Vita at E3 2011). Hopefully it doesn't end up just being streaming if that will be as bad as @PsionicRoshambo stated. Maybe give people the option to download for a small fee (I also remember how that situation went when it came to the Vita and PSP games).

The price was the only thing that stopped me from getting a PS3 initially, so if this gets the PS4's price down around the 360's original or 2nd price points, I would not mind getting one.

EDIT: I also like the controller, lol

That was to be expected for months now, Sony didn't buy Gaikai for kicks and giggles y'know, of course they're planning to utilize streaming to some extent.

Now, I know some of you will bitch about how this is not in the proper USN format but right now I'm drunk and with all do respect to the admins, I don't give a fuuuuuuu! The fact that I can still release a kick ass news story while being drunk is testament to my journalistic prowess!
Wow... there are... so many things wrong in that statement alone...

That would require the PS4 to be backwards compatible, and that would require additional hardware, and that would increase the price significantly. Streaming is a compromise but it's better than nothing.

So you'd say this is stream of consciousness reporting?

As the article says, with their acquisition of Gaikai, this only makes sense. Plus, if game streaming manages to catch on in the next 7-8 years or so, then they'll be in a good position to capitalize on that. Also, seeing how backwards compatibility drove up the price of the PS3 at launch (and we all know how that went), I can understand why they'd include this workaround in its place.

Wrong. What drove up the price at launch was the Cell and the BluRay player. PS2 BC never cost that much. Sony themselves admitted PS2 BC didn't add much to the cost.

The CELL is still an expensive part though, so if they want to cut costs and release an affordable console, no wonder it's the first thing they want out.

It's better than nothing people, in the end it just to prevent their new system from launching at $599 just to include the crazy architecture the PS3 used. They can't resort to emulators with a system that complex, not to mention the ridiculous amount of power the PS4 would need to have in order to accomplish that, I don't think even todays high end PC's would be able to emulate it at a passable speed and accuracy.

That said I don't see why anyone would want to stream their games in the first place, no matter how fast your internet connection is there will always be noticeable input lag.

And yet, Gaikai thrives. It seems a lot of people don't mind the lag.
Yeah, I'm just picky about that stuff, you'll ever see me ever do though it unless I get a completely fiber optical connection straight to the server.
There is a market for it obviously, but I don't think that market is 100% satisfied with the service even if it's good enough for the job.

In any case there's nothing to worry about, Sony will continue to support the PS3 just like with the PS2, remember they promised a 10 year life span minimum, there isn't anything to complain about, and Sony going the extra mile with streaming just shows that they did what they could about it.

Here's an idea...how about we all just wait four days and bitch on the official announcement instead of rumors? It's not like all this is going to change anything.

Streaming PS3 games via an internet connection? Everyone obviously has fast stable internet connections that never drop. True story.

That's exactly my concern.
Internet services in Brazil are really bad.
Streaming PS3 games here seems almost impossible

HD quality game streaming pretty much limits the market to "first world". I'm not sure if it's entirely "wise" to keep the second and third worlds out of the loop. Because, let's face it, the only countries equipped with fast enough (and cheap enough) internet to support HD game streaming are first world countries. Name me a second or third world country who can *consistently* support a fast enough stream, if you can.

Otherwise, don't expect this to instantly pick up in volume enough for them to see it as "successful". At best, it will be a "premium" feature, for people with premium quality internet subscriptions.

Odds are the PS4 wouldn't be able to support PS3 games natively. Before you cry about, remember when the PS3 was able to support PS2 games natively? God that was a lovely $599 price tag.

So would you rather it not be backwards compatible (before you bitch about that, do remember there are plenty of consoles in history that haven't been but people just love them) or for it to not be backwards compatible natively but support game streaming as an option?
