If you are thinking of playing Wii games on your Wii U, I just found out that the hand display does not work with Wii games , it works only on the Wii U games, (what a bummer)

I wish they would have added support to play Wii games on the GamePad. But that might have required them to do more of the compatibility layer in software, which might not have been possible anyway.

Well no it wouldn't of been possible without changing how vWii works. Wii U hardware is not accessible by the vWii.

I don't know why people would really want to do this anyway, were you thinking of strapping a sensor bar to your gamepad??

According to the instruction manual, the GamePad has a sensor bar built in, on either side of the camera.
Not sure if any games use it yet.

I was just coming here to ask this same question lol. I'm about to get a Wii U and I was wondering if any Wii games could be played on the handheld controller.

Now can all Wii U games be played on the handheld controller? Or only certain games?

As of Now just wii u games can use the gamepad. Maybe in the future the software will be updated to allow this.

I hope we eventually will be able to play wii games on the gamepad. Since it does have a sensor bar it looks like they planned for it but maybe the feature wasn't ready for when the system came out.

I don't get it.

Say you do play on the GamePad, with that tiny screen, you're gonna have to barely move your hands otherwise the aimer will go off the screen. And topple that with the fact that you'd have to sit a couple feet away from the controller anyways in order for it to work properly, and even then you'd barely be able to see the screen at all and tell what you're doing.

If it was for games like Mario Galaxy where a modder got rid of the motion controls and you were able to control everything with the gamepad, sure, it would be cool. But to actually point your wiimote at the screen on the gamepad, no, I'm sorry but that is just stupid.

Even if it made it portable, you wouldn't be able to go far away from the WiiU anyways unless you live in a frickin warehouse, so you might as well just use the tv.

I believe only ZombiU and NintendoLand at this time don't have off-tv play. The rest do.

NintendoLand is ~1/3 off-tv play compatible, for example, the coin minigame,NintendoLand's main area, the zelda minigame while using the bow, the metroid minigame while controlling the ship, and Donkey Kong Crash Course are all able to be played off-tv. i know as i have before many times.
Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed can go on the "no off-tv" game list. Single Player can only be played on TV as the gamepad is used as a topdown map view.
it does however support using just the gamepad if you do multiplayer (1 on gamepad, upto 4 on TV)

Wrong. Sonic has complete off-tv play. Just slide down on gamepad screen anytime during play and you swich to gamepad-play. Swipe up again and you're back to tv-mode. Also 2-player splitscreen is gone with one playing on gamepad and one on the tv :-)
