Hacking Homebrew Newbie Needs Advice For Xmas Present!

Hi all,

I need some help/advice for my nephews xmas present. Hope someone can help, it's a little confusing.

He has a 3DS XL running firmware 4.1.0-8e (I'm aware this is quite old!) I have bought an R4i-SDHC 3DS cart that supports up to 4.4.0-10 but am aware that since I bought this card a new 4.5 firmware has been released by Nintendo.

My question is, if I install the 1.64b kernel for the card I have will it work without needing to update his 3DS from it's current 4.1.0-8e firmware?

If I software update the 3DS to 4.5 firmware then I don't think the card I have will work as no kernel has been released to support 4.5 yet.

First update the card and then the system.

If you install the latest kernel then it will work on any 3DS firmware 4.4.0-10 or lower.
Just placing the 1.64b kernel on the card is not enough though, you might have to run the upgrade on an older DS.

Kernel is not the firmware. You need to wait for the firmware update to come out, and then run it (simply placing it on the MicroSD will not update the flash cart for 3DS compatibility).

Thanks to you all for your replies. I'm still quite confused about how this works.

You need to run the update. If the update comes within the Kernel itself then you'll need to do the "update" thing carts sometimes have on the home screen, read the cart's site for info.

Otherwise of the firmware updates come separate from the kernel, they'll come as .NDS files you run like a DS ROM.

Not quite. It is more like-
1) Download 1.64 kernel
2) Copy kernel and games to Micro SDHC
3) Put Micro SDHC card in cart
4) Put cart in an old DS or DS Lite.
5) Run update from cart menu
6) Tell your nephew not to update the 3DS unless a fix comes out!

Until the cart update is run, the 3DS will simply refuse to recognize the cart unless you bought it pre-patched. So it will be unable to update the cart.

There's two different kinds of updates.

1 - Updates for game compatibility. These are updates to get new DS ROMs and such to run. This is simply updated by replacing files/kernel-stuff on the MicroSD.

2 - Firmware updates for DSi/3DS compatibility. This is the big concern, and this is the stuff you need to actually run an update file to do.

DavoGamer,do not update your 3DS XL. 1.64b only support 3DS4.4.0-10 and it does not supoort 3DS 4.5.0-10

Ok, so...

I've spent several days now trying to get this work and have borrowed several DS' in the process.

As far as I can tell I have updated to flash cart itself to 1.64b so it can support 4.4 but whenever I now load games onto the card the show up in the game menu with a 4k file size and I get a load rom errcode=-1 telling me to restart the system.

I am at wits end, can anyone suggest a possible solution?

Are you using the latest kernel too?
