I just brought myself a Midnight Purple 3DS last week. I manage to finsih set up however, I get this error message:

"An error has occurred. Please hold power button to turn off. Etc"

The firmware is 4.2.0-9U.

Can I fix this myself or should I exchange at Target?

I just opened and turned on the 3DS for the first time today. I manage to get pass the set up settings and then I get the error message. I haven't any games/flashcards.

The error messages appears after like 20 seconds or so after I turn it on. So I can't really do anything since I get an error message to turn off after about 20 seconds.

No idea if this is relavent but I took the SD card out to see if it was the SD. It was not.

Hmmmm, well the only thing i can say is to call Nintendo but there is an other option too.
Get an other SD card and swap it with the one in the 3DS, maybe somethings wrong with the SD card u got with the 3DS.

If it errors out 20 seconds after booting then the chances are the WiFi board is damaged. Turning off Wireless communications is a quick fix. Exchanging it was the best decision.
