I can not get my Wii to display 16:9 aspect ratio. I never used to have a problem with this, but now I do and I am not sure if it's from changing TVs or from hacking my Wii.

I am using component cables.
In the Wii settings I set it to 16:9
In the Wii setting I set it to 480p
On the TV I set it display Normal

My Wii still displays in 4:3 in the menu and in games that I think support 16:9....Skyward Sword/NSMB Wii are what I have played most recently. (Thosse should be 16:9 right?)

My Television is a vizio model e3d470vx.

I can use picture stretching setting on the televison but they look like crap and distort the picture. Am I missing something here? It should be 16:9 right?

Vizio told me to try the standard AV cables since my component ones are third party, gonna try that tonight. I emailed Nintendo as well.

When you change the Wii to 16:9, you should notice a difference on the menu - the horizontal buttons should look more squished, at least. What you want to do is set your TV to stretch the picture horizontally to fill the screen. (Analog outputs (including component & composite) don't have any way to tell the TV how wide the picture is supposed to be.)

When playing standard DVD's on a wide screen television the picture automatically stretches to fill the screen(usually, at least if it is anamorphic widescreen)....there are no black bars on the left and right....usually instead there are bars on the top and bottom. I am not sure how the TV knows how to display it that way but it does. I thought the Wii did the samething....I am almost certain it did on my old TV....the menu and certain games would fill the entire screen. Mario Party 8 did not fill the entire screen, but Metroid Prime 3 would.

On my new TV seems that whatever setting I use on the Wii it always displays it in a 4:3 box with black bars on the right and left.

Thew picture stretching is necessary for most TVs since for whatever reason unless you're working with at least a resolution like 720p most televisions won't recognize the image as being outputted in widescreen. On my setup for instance while in the display info it says 16:9 the picture doesn't automatically fill the screen. I have to set it to manually fill the screen. Point is I don't think there's actually any problem.

So it sounds like my old television recognized to to output in widescreen but my new TV does not. You make it sound like a common problem...weird I have had such trouble finding info on this.

So I have to figure out which stretch setting will display the widescreen image properly. I will have to test this with Mario Party 8 since I know that game should be in the 4:3 box even in widescreen.

I did try stretching the screen and the image seemed distorted to me....guess I will have to play around with the settings some more.

For my T.V., after setting the Wii to 16:9 I had to change the setting on my T.V. to 16:9 in the picture options for component video. That worked for me, but then again not all T.Vs are created equal.

Ok, I set my TV to the wide setting and I guess that's the proper setup. Put on Mario Party 8 and the mini games are still only shown in 4:3 and the image doesn't seem stretched.

So I guess I have been playing with a squished image by setting the TV display normal (4:3) and setting the Wii in widescreen.

I actually think the image looks better in 4:3, I may just switch the Wii to the 4:3 setting and keep the TV setting on normal

Yes, your picture will be better with most games.
Wii was developed with standard ratio/ crt resolution in mind. Images of games utilizing 4:3 will look a lot better in this mode.
Some newer games only have 16:9 ( New super mario bros. LoZ Skyward Sword, Xenoblade etc... ) those game will have a smaller display region in order to keep the ratio right, this results in letterbox view.
All 16:9 displayed games on Wii is anamorphic as resolution never actually changes. This will stretch images and can make your picture somewhat blurry depending on the scaling ability on your TV.
If you think about this it makes sense. In order to display in 16:9 scaled to full screen, pixels need to be enlarged.

Some games will have art work on the side in 16:9 ( Mario party 8, Wario's Shake Dimension etc..) Most games will just be scaled to get the ratio. Getting bigger pictures will always result in bigger pixles when the resolution stays the same. ( 720 x 480 ).
This is especially noticeable on modern flat screens that have less than moderate scaling ability's.

usb loader GX has a global and per game option to set the displayed ratio for your game without setting this in your Wii settings menu.
Great option. Make sure ( as noted before ) to set your tv accordingly to the set ratio on your Wii.
