My PS3 is hacked with kmeaw CFW 3.55.

I want to replace the internal HDD with a 500GB Drive.

Is there anything special I need to keep in mind.

IE:

1) Will my games be backed up when I do a back and restore from the System Setting on the XMB?

2) Will I need to re-install the packages for multiMann, FTP Server and Comgenie Awesome Filemanager 355?

Thanks;

based on the fiasco that happened with numerous people bricking their ps3's with 3.50, I wouldn't re-format your original hdd. additionally, back up all of the game saves and such to either a thumb drive or a usb powered hdd so that you can easily transfer them once you've set up your new hdd.

technically (and according to the owner's manual), you should be able to drop in a new hdd with the firmware update on a thumb drive. when the ps3 powers up, it auto detects that the hdd isn't set up and that you have the firmware update available, so it goes through the motions (quick formats the drive, and then loads the firmware files onto the hdd and updates some files in the bios on your ps3). what happened with 3.50 was that the package was corrupt and even though it updated the bios, it didn't apply some of the necessary files to the hdd, rendering many people's ps3's useless.

my friend has one of the gun metal mgs system which has been bricked since the end of january, and because it's a japanese system, sony of america are being complete tools and not willing to assist him. I've heard from others that they will "unbrick" the system, but at a cost to the end user.

I was planning on doing a backup from the system settings menu, pull and replace the HDD and then do a restore of the backup tghru the system settings.

That is the way I've read to do a HDD upgrade, but those articles where not for hached PS3's.

It's my wife's PS3 and I don't use it at all, but I'm the technical one so I get the job of upgrading and restoring everything.

Is there another way to backup all of the games saves and everything?

I have the official 3.55 firmware update from when I did the CFW install should i use that on the jump drive?

I believe on models CECHA to CECHG the firmware is stored on the NAND flash chip . You will not be asked to reinstall firmware on one of these models but all you data will of course be lost
Starting with CECHH the firmware is stored partially on HDD so you will need to reinstall it

Keep in mind that if you plan on getting a external HDD and taking the HDD out of it to put in the PS3 (sometimes can be much cheaper then buying a internal for some reason) to make sure the HDD is going to work first. Some times WD with take the sata plugs right off the hdd on enclosures, and I know of at lest one Toshiba drive that is thicker then the standard laptop drive.

I put a 500gb drive (I pulled it out of an external) - I believe it was a hitachi drive...

It went seamlessly and was a breeze. You simply backup your internal drive to an external drive using the built in backup feature, replace the internal drive, then power up and format when prompted, then restore. Everything is there.

The only little trick that I seem to remember you having to do was unplug the external when starting the restore from the menu then reconnecting it. Everything is there... no need to back up pieces parts like your saved games, or games you have installed, to anywhere else manually.

Keep in mind that, even if you screw up, you still have your original drive and can simply put it back in

Thanks dexter222.
I thought it was that easy.
I'm going to try it this weekend.
Gotta get a drive.
From what I've read anything larger than a 500GB drive is physically larger insize and won't fit it the system, but between 500 GB internal and 500 GB external I think I'll be fine.

Ok I got a 500GB drive today and put it in, no problems.

Powered it up and it asked me to plug the controller into the USB port and hit the PS button.

Did that then it comes back with

"The system software cannot be run correctly. Press the PS button to try to restart the system."

And it goes on to say the partion is bad and must be reformatted and you must re-install the system software.
Connect storage media that has the update data of version 3.55 or later and then press select & start buttons at the same time.

Did that and it searches for the connected storage and comes back and says...

"No application update data was found. Connect sotrage media..."

I tried a USB jump drive and a USB External drive that I know both work on with this system, becaus I've connected them to it before and it see ie fine.

My system is a CECH-2001A and I'm using the 3.55 OFW PS3UPDAT.PUP that I used prior to running the kmeaw CFW 3.55 when I hacked it.

Any suggestions?

*** Never Mind I got it. I didn't put the update in the PS3>UPDATE folder.

Sorry.

I didn't see this post until after I figured out how to get the update installed.
I installed the OFW 3.55 firmware and am now in the middle of restoring the system from the backup I did a couple of days ago.

Everything looks like it is going fine, I guess I'll see in the morning when the restore is done.

I figure if the restore goes fine I can just do the 3.55 CFW update and then intall the oackages for MultiMann, Awsome File Manager and FTP Server and I'm back up and running.

Sounds like you went through a lot of extra steps but glad you got it working.

I have another drive I think I'll install just so I can do a step by step, button by button tutorial.

Perhaps it will even be stickied

I got everything working, but when I try to update MultiMan from 2.00.02_FULL to the latest version 2.1 I think from with in MultiMan it downloads the package and then I install it from the Install Package on the XMB it installs fine.

Then when I launch MultiMan it comes up with a message that says the install is incomplete and I need to install the Base or Full version.

I had posted the same problem here and some one replied that the link was on the 1st post of that thread.

I downloaded & installed it and everything is fine.

Just going through all my games that I had to re-install when my external drive died last week and figuring which work right away and which need some tweaking.

The swap to the internal drive was not that bad.

Thanks for all the help.

If you are on KMEAW 3.55 CFW and want to upgrade your HDD if/when prompted for the firmware file like Sacohen9665 was must you use the OFW or can you use the CFW?

Also - when starting the process to upgrade the HDD should you go to OFW 3.55 first or does it not matter?

Thanks in advance

From what dexter222 says you don't have to do anything.
I think my mistake was that I had the external HD plugged in when I turned the system on with the new internal drive in it.

I think that is only if your system is between firmware CECHA to CECHG like flo said.

my guess is that you could put the old HDD back in and everything should work fine.. I do not remember having to update anything(but it was a while back)
