I have a 3DS that I never use and with the release of Persona 4 on the horizon the idea of selling my 3DS for cash to put towards a shiny new Vita is mighty intriguing, so I've been wondering about trade-in rates for the damn thing. Other than 2 slightly noticeable scratches on the top screen due to the shitty idea of framing the bottom screen rather prominently, it's in immaculate condition, is fully functional, and hasn't really been used since I bought it because I'm completely apathetic about every single one of the titles available. Anyone got any idea of how much I'd get?

Not much of course, but to give you some idea. They were going to give me $20 for my brand new in box DSi XL. $30 since they now have a 50% trade in credit if you trade in a 3DS unit.

Welp, fuck that. Amazon's offering at least $67.80 anyway. Plus they've got a used Vita for 170, although the prospect of it including "six ARcards" is a bit worrying. Thanks anyway, Devin.

I found a forum post online that put the value at $80 dollars. Granted, it's months old by this point, and different locations might offer different deals. Still, it should give you something of an idea.

If you want to get the most for your 3DS, you might want to consider cutting out the middleman and selling it yourself. You could try using Ebay or Craigslist to see if there are any takers.

No problem. If you call the nearest store, they'll probably tell you the trade in price if the store isn't too busy. It's what I do to plan out what to buy, and how much money I'll need.

You can call to ask but Gamestop may charge a refurbishing fee. You can try returning it to Nintendo to get the top screen scratches removed, which would increase the value of the system. I would personally try multiple trading sites to see if you could get a straight trade. Gamestop had a 2X system trade in bonus but that has ended.

Sounds like a plan.

Don't sell your 3ds. Just take the extra time and save up for the vita proper.
That way when a gotta-have game comes out for the 3ds (or hax), you won't have to re-buy the system.
Considering that between the games currently out for it and the coming titles both fail to have anything I'd pay $40 for and I don't really have the depth perception to enjoy the 3D effect, it's not really looking like that's going to be an issue. The Vita on the other hand has LBP, Persona 4, Gravity Rush, AC3:L, and a couple other games I'm actually interested. Looking way more promising at the moment.

Gamestop will only give you $45 for your 3DS. You can wait for a cowboom daily deal on consoles. They usually sell 3G Vitas for $140ish.

I didn't know about cowboom, actually, thanks. Might keep my 3DS if I can get a Vita for ~$140, and I'm not really in any rush.

Okay, you should try selling it online or trying to get a straight trade for a Vita plus cash on various sites like Craigslist, Cheapassgamer and Gametz. You'll get around $95 dollars after fees if you sell it online. Depending on where you live you might get more at a local video game store. If you don't mind buying on Ebay/Amazon, you can get a Vita for around the $180 range if used. If you want a new Vita be looking to spend in the $200 range.

The holidays are coming up, and both gamestop and amazon LOVE to have offeres and deals. Im sure trading in your system towards the purchase of a vita would cut the price largely, especially if your a power up rewards pro member.
back when the 3DS zelda edition came out, I traded in my old PSP 1000 toward it and managed to knock off 60$ with the holiday special deal and my powerup card.
Any other day and id have only knocked off about 30$!
