So I got an Android Coby Kyros MID7014 tablet, but it's falling slightly short of expectations. However, I want to keep it as it's all I have. The biggest issue I'm having is that it's running a really old version of Android, 2.3.3. I read on the Coby site that it's a bad idea to update it because it's designed with the version of Android that's already installed on it, but I want to have access to the Google Play store (I don't have that on this as it's unsupported, apparently) and make the tablet run a little better.

Is it possible to root it and upgrade it? And where would I start with rooting? Or is it safe to upgrade it without rooting?

i have that one ill just tell you this "GET RID OF IT"

it is slower than snot and nothing runs on ir
It does everything I need it to, but not what I want it to. Plus, it's the only thing in my price range, and the closest I'll get to a laptop for a while.

Alright. Just finished rooting it after a minor accident (I dropped it, cracked the screen and now have to resort to using a mouse.) but it's working nicely. Just gotta make it lag less. Perhaps I can clock it.

What is your price range?
Right now, none, because I'm jobless. If I were to return the tablet, about $100.

I actually bought the tablet in a store lol. Plus I'm too lazy to return it as I have a ghetto laptop of it now.

The only thing I need to do is to figure out how to disable the touch screen altogether. I cracked it, so now I'm using a USB mouse, but the only problem I'm having is that there's times when it thinks the screen is being touched, and the tablet spazzes out.

Are you using a full sized keyboard and mouse? There are nifty little USB keyboard cases that you should look into

You could always try a "orientation lock" app to keep your tablet in landscape mode if you're using it for general purposes.

That's pretty neat. The only issue I'm really having is that touch screen though. I'll look into finding a case like that though. That'd be rather useful actually.

Any luck in finding a "Orientation Lock" app that works well with your tablet?
