For those of you that aren't convinced to switch to DuckDuckGo just yet, maybe this will convince you.

Wow, thanks a bunch Twin, New favorite search engine.

I was recently "enlightened" by this knowledge a few weeks ago. To say that it pissed me off would be an understatement.

I'll be using Google for many things, but I won't be using it as a search engine anymore.

Or just turn off the search personalization...

I've done that, and all seems well, until I decided to do an experiment (for science!)

Me and a friend were using two different computers, on two different networks, and we decided to "opt-out" at the same time. We both spent two days googling random shit, neither of us aware of the other's search terms. On the third day we both searched for a certain term. Now since we opted out on both of our accounts, the results would be the same, right? Wrong. The results that were displayed on the first page were moderately varied.

So, I believe there's still a bit of Google flim-flam going on, even after you opt-out.

I think this is pretty cool. I mean, it won't stop pirates. Which I don't think is the goal. People who want to pirate something will find a way, there is no way around that. It's not like Google isn't going to show theses results anyway, it's just that they're going to show legal alternatives first. Which I don't think is such a bad thing.

For example, somebody would be looking for a way to stream music for free. They might Google "free music" and instead of the most popular torrent/piracy site popping up first, it might show Spotify first. And then whatever illegal alternatives exist.

Or, another example "free tv shows" could be a common search term. Instead of showing whatever site that's illegal and most popular first, they would show Hulu.

This would stop Megaupload(or whatever your preferred file sharing site that can sometimes have illegal content) from appearing first, but it would still appear in the search. It's not like Google is going to censor your searches.

I did some "sketchy, pirate-like" searching. it got me some pretty damn good reliable results. Google got me *some* when I had to go through a couple of pages. From just a few minutes of "searching" on DuckDuckGo, I found new websites to watch one of my most favorite tv shows, Falling Skies, on websites I didn't even know existed!. DuckDuckGo could gain the same popularity as Megaupload did in terms of a search filter to "acquire stuff" digitally on

if the "elites" find out that DuckDuckGo becomes a extremely popular "unfiltered pirate search engine", Google might get involved and say they are giving the DMCA the finger, thus, breaking the law, by not hiding those results from us, and they might just force them to filter their results or be cease and desisted.

Something that fucks the system, doesn't usually fuck the system for long.

either way: I'm glad I saw this thread, added the DuckDuckGo firefox search plugin, and I've been a happy camper. Quack :tpi:

Both came up with results about hacking the Motorola Photon, but the problem is that you can't expect DuckDuckGo to know what you want because they're not tracking what you're interested in, like Google is. The trick is taking out all ambiguity. If you want hacks for the Motorola Photon, search for Motorola Photon Hacks not just Photon Hacks. Google makes the assumption you meant Motorola Photon.

I've done that, and all seems well, until I decided to do an experiment (for science!)

Me and a friend were using two different computers, on two different networks, and we decided to "opt-out" at the same time. So, I believe there's still a bit of Google flim-flam going on, even after you opt-out.

Did you perform the search at the same time? And are you both located in the same country (and did you have all vpns/proxies switched off)?

Same time, nearly to the same second, same state, and no vpns/proxies were used.

How exactly is the info gathered for customized searches? I consistently clear all of my private data and such whenever I close the browser, and when I was doing those test searches for that bubble deal, all of my searches turned up incredibly middle of the line results (for example, the Barack Obama one didn't bring up any sites that were specifically leftist or rightist). It seems like that search bubble business is dependent on those files your browser keeps unless you make it a point to remove them. Anyways, none of that is the point of this copyright deal. I thought it was pretty simple: sites that have copyright claims filed against them will be prioritized lower no matter what your previous searches were. It will be information stored on their servers that is factored into each and every search. Although DuckDuckGo can bypass that, so can pretty much any other search engine. DuckDuckGo just doesn't make an attempt to cater your searches more towards what you may actually want to see, and tries to keep their searches unbiased (which could be interpreted as a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you are).

Seriously, you're all acting like Google gathering information and handling their business like a business is a bad thing. They're looking to cater to the customer with what they want to see, and as well, they're looking to protect other businesses. I'm not seeing the problem.

Off topic but what you should've typed was "Motorola Photon Android Development".

Yes I'm an XDA drone...

All in all, I guess we'll just have to see how this rolls out. In terms of sketchy searching, I've usually used the site:file_name_here method, so Google was never necessary for me to find new sites. (Porn on the other hand....) They're just trying to protect their asses atm. I could argue this is silly and unnecessary but the fact of the matter is that they're stationed in the US which has been a bit too trigger-happy when it comes to copywrite as of late. That being said, I've had to use DuckDuckGo on various occasions due to Google's search feature not working well on TOR certain setups. If necessary its not a bad service and I'd live with having to switch to it.

Google already knows exactly the places you enter when you search & according to the privacy policy they can be used by the fbi to his pleasure  , so this new algoritm will be a nice additon to the anti google list. If you have firefox then get greasemonkey and adblock plus to get ride of all those stupid google scripts

So you use Google and cripple it with custom scripts solely meant to remove aspects of it? Why not just switch? That's like saying you eat a pizza but first take off all the toppings.

Removing a cockroach from the pizza is not precisely cripple, i haven't ordered cockroaches with my pizza.

An Spy is not precisely an "aspect" you want.
Google is good, i Make it Perfect with scripts.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
