Hello, I'm in the same boat i guess. Also use swap magic for the PS2 but my lens doesn't like copied disks anymore. Model number SCPH-70003(PAL). Where would i begin doing what i need to do to run PS2 games straight off my HDD?

Thanks in advance :-)

@ centrix, to make sure that your ps2 is compatible with freemcboot check this link:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/scph-9xxxx-v18-ps2-fmcb-compatibility-consolidated-information-63103/
If not, don't despair they're other software technique

@ david, you can install freemcboot or use your swap magic disc to boot openPS2loader
freemcboot newbie package: http://freemcboot.info/noobie.html
freemcboot manual:http://freemcboot.info/

@ both: to launch an application from swapmagic 3.6+ you need a fat32 usb device with a folder called SWAPMAGIC (case sensitive) on the root. in that folder you place the application you want to lauch and rename it SWAPMAGIC.ELF (case sensitive)
ulaunch: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f113/unofficial-launchelf-v4-42-a-37242/ (file browser, application launcher)
openPS2loader: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f150/open-ps2-loader-project-v0-9-a-62141/ (back-up loader)
openPS2loader manual: http://openps2loader.info/8/

about the use of external hdd, if used from usb, most games will have long loading times and choppy cut-scenes, also only fat 32 is supported, so you'll have to use an application that will split the iso to circumvent the limit of 4gb (explained in the manual). If used from the network, most games will play smoothly with almost no perceptible difference aside from some HQ cut scenes that will get choppy (like ffx). the best speed would technically come from an internal hdd, which require some serious hard modding on slims (hd combo box).

I'm not sure if you are any good at soldering, but there is a IDE/eSATA Mod that can be done to the 70000 series which then can use a USB/eSATA external drive. You will use the USB side to install games from PC and the eSATA to load games from the PS2.

Neither a hard drive or FMCB breaks the PS2's primary disc lockout check. You still need a modchip if you'd like to install imports or backups, direct to hard drive from the PS2's own tray without any swap, in the same manner that domestic retail games allow.
