Hi I bought an iPhone 3gs 16gb from ebay and i'm stuck lol

The iPhone won't power up and won't restore

The guy I bought it from said he was doing the 5.1.1 update and It came up with the iTunes error (1601)

I tried to restore through iTunes but at first I got the error (3194) so after a few minutes on google i downloaded Tiny Umbrella and changed host to TSS. I tried to restore again but this time it went past extracting and even said apple verified restore then after staying at preparing to restore iPhone for 10 minutes I got error (1601) I've tried:

~ using iReb r4+r5 to get into pwned DFU it works but still (1601) error
~Tried downloading ios 4.2.1, 5.0.1+5.1.1 still error (1601)
~Tried redsn0w 0.9.14b2 Pwned DFU says USB connection problem
~iDetector says i'm already in DFU mode
~Uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled iTunes on my netbook I even tried installing iTunes on my PC but still (1601) although no (3194)

So please help me T_T

It might be that you're trying to use Cydia's servers for 5.1.1 SHSH blobs, but it doesn't have them for the new iPhone. Try deleting your hosts file and re-downloading the update file in iTunes.

Many people loves to sell their iphone on ebay saying they don't know too much about them, while knowing perfectly it's fried beyond repair.

Then the buyer see the auction and thinks "oh it's a bargain, the guy is just dumb I'll bring it back home restore and voila!"... buying faulty iphones on ebay is like gambling, you can find some real deals, but it's rare and you end up with an expensive paperweight.

Anyway keep trying, try to charge it fully overnight even if it does not seem to show any sign of life, iTunes is also known to show cryptic error messages when there's an hardware failure (for example a dead battery).
-Try holding power+home for quite a long time to see if it can reboot and wasn't just stuck in dfu.

I tried without using cydia host files but just got error (3194) when verifying by apple (5.1.1)

I also tried restoring to 4.2.1 which is stock for the second batch of iphone 3gs & 5.0.1 but same error unless I change to Cydia host but still gives error (1601)

Thanks for your reply by the way.

Assuming you've used software like redsn0w or TinyUmbrella in the past, your hosts file might have been altered a long time ago and you actually haven't tried using Apple's servers yet. Items like your iTouch 1G might work because it's jailbroken and has had its SHSH blobs backed up to the Cydia servers.

Edit: It should also be worth pointing out that it would be impossible to restore to previous software versions like 4.2.1 and 5.0.1 unless the iPhone was jailbroken when those were the newest firmwares and the SHSH blobs for those specific updates were backed up to the Cydia servers. Assuming the device hasn't been jailbroken, 5.1.1 is your only option.

I only downloaded redsn0w and TinyUmbrella yesterday I only used iReb & blackra1n to do my ipod touch so I haven't changed hosts before

And for my iPhone when I plug it in iTunes says I'ts found an iPhone in recovery and that it needs to be restored before it can be used in iTunes and when I click restore iTunes wants to restore my iphone to 4.2.1 but I've tried holding shift and clicking restore to pick my own .ispw file to use I've also tried 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 the same way aswell

I just uninstalled iTunes again and redownloaded it from apple and here's what happens now
~ I plug in my iPhone, iTunes opens a box saying my iPhone needs restoring before it can be used
~ iTunes wants to upgrade/restore it to 5.1.1 instead of 4.2.1 as it did before
~ Extracting package does fine as does Apple signing and verifying no (3194) error message without using TinyUmbrella
~ Unfortunately stays at Preparing to restore until giving error (1601)

Have you tried booting teathered or using recovery fix in redsnow? make sure you have the latest version of redsnow, put into dfu mode and try that

I've come to the conclusion that it's stuck in DFU mode

as I just tried the DFU IPSW icon in redsn0w on my ipod touch it created a DFU restore ipsw I restored my ipod through iTunes I got error (1602) as it should do then I went into TinyUmbrella And used the exit recovery button which doesn't show with my iPhone and my ipod exited recovery and started up fine.

I then tried the same thing on my iPhone as i did with my ipod but this time I got error (1601) and no exit recovery button just the fix recovery button which doesn't seem to do anything for me. I plug my iPhone back out put it back in and TinyUmbrella still says DFU Device Connected

Try this, its a long shot but i had bought a ipod touch with a similar problem and fixed it this way, I used the latest version of RedSn0w and chose the Just Boot option. Depending on the firmware and generation its possible that its stuck in an untethered jailbreak. If it is then all you need to do is plug it in, select just boot, and wait. Let me know if this works, just follow the instructions you get from redsnow. If not i'll see what else i can do.

Like I've already said, you should try deleting your computer's hosts file. Even though you're not running TinyUmbrella, the changes have already been made to your hosts file. I'm pretty sure that's your issue. At the very least, if it wasn't your issue before, it's going to be an issue now.

I know exactly what is wrong with the iPhone but I don't know how to fix it, I'm just going to assume the first part. The guy who sold you the iPhone stole it, might not be true but at the moment it seems like the most likely explanation. He tried to update the iOS, or some similar action thru iTunes. He gets error 1601, which I had and if I'm not mistaken it's somewhere along the lines of; try a different USB slot, remove your firewall, use a different computer or if it persists get it serviced. Now I have had this happen to me many times. I have a really old pc that I first used my iPhone with, now I have moved over to a laptop, when I tried to upgrade to ups 5.1.1 I got the same error, 1601 or whatever it is. The only solution that I have found is either putting into dfu mode on redsn0w, using the iTunes restore fix button, then possibly booting teathered. You could boot it from the computer of the person who originally owned it. You could send it into apple to have it serviced to. I didn't buy my iPhone from an apple store, my friend found it his hotel room in Mexico and sold it to me. Somehow it was running 4.something and was wiped clean. I will ask him how he did it do you can do the same.
