Israel stages Holocaust survivor beauty pageant

A beauty pageant for Holocaust survivors has been held in Israel for the first time, stirring controversy.

Fourteen women, aged 74 to 97, walked along a red carpet in the city of Haifa and described their personal sufferings from the Nazis during World War II.​

Hava Hershkovitz, 79, who had to flee her native Romania, was later crowned the winner of the pageant.​

Organisers said the contest was a celebration of life, but critics denounced it as offensive.​

To be honest, it may not be as bad as it seems. Those are some pretty elderly people and many people do not recognize what they have gone through - it may get pretty depressing after a while. The contestants, although it may have reminded them of not the best time of their life, get another round of attention they probably strongly desired.

It is controversial, however here is a quote from one contestant:
"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way."
So the bottom line is, it's kinda wierd, kinda good, kinda what the fuck, and Hitler can totally suck on it.

I mean, for fuck's sake, dogs and cats have beauty pageants! Little four-year-olds have 'pageants' where they're made to look like whores!

I love how several holocaust survivors participated in, and probably really enjoyed, this beauty pageant, and yet everyone is freaking out over it.

I'm not going to sit here and preach that this was a normal and typical event. It's pretty odd, but the pageant contestants weren't held hostage and made to do it at gunpoint. They got to have some fun, and got to share their horrible experience in a pretty unique manner. I really don't see anything wrong with it.

I'm not denying the jews suffering from the Nazis or anybody else and they have their right to organize an event as much as they want or the way they want to, but it's hypocritical of the Israelis to do this while they've killed a thousands of Palestinians including kids and women.

Jews are not the only victims of the Holocaust - Poles, Gypsies and other nationalities from Central and Eastern Europe (mostly of Slavic origin) were also exterminated by the Nazis. Some so-called "paranoid white people" also have a right to be offended, and even if their nationality is not among those victimized by the Nazi regime, it's still an event that was in bad taste.

The Holocaust wasn't just a Jewish tragedy, or a Polish tragedy. It was a human tragedy, a stain on the history of all mankind.

Seeing this pageant as being in poor taste doesn't make someone overly PC or paranoid in any way.
