Actually they are charging for their guides. BrewWii, Unlocker Ultra, Wii Unlock Plus or whatever they call these are just guides. If they include free download links to the app sources in their guides, does that mean they are selling free software?

If I write a 100 pages PDF with everything about the Wii and want to sell it, does this make me a scammer?
The packages include the HackMii Installer and other software. They are guides, but they also do something illegal: include copyrighted software!
How do you know? Did you purchase their product? I have found free links on one of those sites: http://myhomebreware.com/links.html
Go to the Hackmii Installer blog (go to the year 2009 posts) and come back to us.

That was 2009. We have 2012. I recall a legal disput between a homebrew dev and one of those sites in the past which resulted in an admin of those sites posting free links to apps.

I don't think there is anything wrong about hacking a persons Wii or whatever. If they hack it for you for money then its all right, because its the service that they are charging you for. I used to hack peoples PSP's all the time before in school(back when it was popular, and I was the only one with a pandora battery), for $15-$20. They knew they could do it as well its just that they were to lazy to do so.

a) You should've quoted, like I just did, and
b) We already know there isn't anything wrong with hacking Wii's for money.

Ok, I will agree that it is not wrong to mod someone's wii and make money when they are unwilling to learn it themselves. But you people say $5, or $15-$20 is complete bullshit. You get a lot more from people because I am sure you are also loading up a hard drive full of pirated games.

Hell, IIRC, TheXboxGuy was charging like $80 for HBC installs. And I see shit on CL all the time for people charging $50+. Don't lie to me and tell me you only get $5 and make it look innocent.

The sad thing is, most people who are modding wii's for money don't truly know how the wii works or how to repair it when things go wrong. Most people just follow the tutorials online or just use modmii to get everything.

Have I gotten paid to mod someone's wii, yes, well kinda. I remod every wii that I get in for brick repairs, but I repair the brick and that is what people send their wii's to me for. Me going and properly modding a wii after I repair it is just an extra safety so that everything is working the way it should and the owner has no more reason to dick around with it and possibly brick it again from another stupid mistake.

Those shameless idiots. If they are gonna mod a Wii for money, they should actually know how to do it themselves and offer a Wii unbricking service like you @DeadlyFoez.

I do only charge $5 but I've been paid $10 which doesn't happen so often and I'm being constantly asked to give them game but I refuse. I do know how the Wii works and I take precautions so the Wii can be recovered if a brick ever occurs.

I would offer that but I dont have all the tools and know how for all the types of bricks.

i don't charge at all, i do it for fun, i like seeing the face of the people when they see what the wii is capable of doing. an love rubbing it in the face of the ones who have ps3/xbox. an they have wii's. some of the ones i mod that have the other game systems end up selling them cause they don't play them anymore.
an if they do want to pay, i choose a mod to donate it to. but most of the time, i don't except the payment. shit it only takes 5-7 min to actually crack the wii. i do every thing in front of them so they learn how to do it on their own. ( give them a fish they eat,, teach them how to fish, they will never go hungry.). i think thats how the saying goes.

Quite honestly I find it easier to believe that someone provides free softmods rather than someone charging $5 for a softmod. Its fairly well known that instrinsic motivation (ie. that good feeling you get when softmodding someone's wii) is diminished when coupled with extrinsic motivators (ie. cash), this is known as the overjustification effect. I think that generally speaking $5 isn't enough extrinsic motivation to compensate for the loss of intrinsic motivation, so that's why I find it hard to believe people softmod other ppl's Wii's for $5 (I'm not saying it's impossible, just that its hard to swallow... lol, that's what she said). It's similar to when someone comes up to me on the street and asks to buy a cigarette from me, I won't accept their cash because it cheapens the small act of kindness I am performing and makes it seem like I am only doing them the favour for $0.50. Seriously, if you're going to charge someone to softmod their Wii, who in their right minds would do it for $5? Either do it for free (for that warm tingley feeling), or charge something more than the cost of half a pack of smokes. But either way, I think it should be communicated that they could do it for free if they want to put in the time themselves.

Amen.

Reminds me of when my friend's hard drive corrupted because she unplugged the power cable (computer was running) to plug the hair dryer instead (eh, women). I offered to fix it for free which I did but afterwards she came back to me and wanted to offer me 20$. I refused, but she said she'll kick my nutz if I don't accept. I like fixing computer stuff, always free. But this time for the sake of my nutz I had to accept, lol.

Sounds like a generous friend. Not in a very good way, but still, a very generous friend.

Give a man a fish and he will feed himself for a day. Give a man a fishing rod and teach him how to fish and he will sell the rod for drugs.
