The hype for one of the year's hottest video games, Mass Effect 3 (out March 6, on PS3, Xbox 360 and PCs, ages 17-up) is reaching new stratospheric heights.

In case you don't know, a playable demo has already hit Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

But next week, a select intrepid few will have the opportunity to play the full game before it hits stores. Publisher Electronic Arts will be launching copies of the game into space using weather balloons that will be released in New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London and Paris.

Each game has a GPS tracking device onboard and fans can track their return to the Earth on masseffect.com to find a copy and play it a week or more before the game hits stores. (Might not be a bad idea to follow @[member='masseffect'], either.)

In other Mass Effect news, a new trailer for the game will be shown during AMC's TV series The Walking Dead Sunday at 9 p.m./ 8 p.m. CT.

I've heard of dumb marketing schemes, but this one is WAY out there.

So....does anyone have a GPS tracker I can borrow?
You know, just in case one floats near here?
*waiting with a shotgun to take the balloon down*

It would be funny if one of these gets cracked and put on the internet :)

OT : Is Mass Effect really good ? I tried the first one, but I didn't really get into it.

Yeah, personally I don't really like games where you use guns and stuff, but ME is def an exception, all the games have a really solid story and the way your actions and choices in game affect your relationship with other characters is really good... To get the full joy out of the games tho, you should play and finish all games and then when play the sequel, the save file from your previous game will be used, allowing your previous choices and character to be used and affecting the way the game will play. ^^

Or if you're like me and really didn't care for ME1 very much, but still want to make the decisions in ME1 on your own, get the Genesis DLC.
ME2 is a masterpiece, IMO.

So if each game has a tracker
and the person who finds it first takes it home
everyone will know where it is and go steal it :O

also MAss Effect has never appealed to me, it just looks boring.

Kinda off-topic here, but you think they'd ever release Mass Effect 1 on PS3. Seems weird just having 2-3 on the console.

Microsoft either owns the rights to the first one or put money into its development or something. Hence the reason ME1 only appears on 360 and windows

That's pretty damn cool if you ask me.

I hope the copies are marked somehow, afterall, they could score Astronomical prices on E-Bay.
They'll most likely have original covers, no code bar at the back, etc...
If they just released a normal copy of the game, exactly like the ones that are going for sale it wouldn't be as exciting to scavenge hunt. =3

How funny would it be if they just game in an ordinary jewel case with no cover, booklet, or online pass?

It would be pretty unfunny.

The lucky "finders-keepers" of the first copies wouldn't be able to get online and perform d*ck on d*ck rubbing action, marvelling at their immense levels of Win and Luck.

They got the game for free its not like they were cheated out of the online. I think it would be pretty amussing to see their faces as they track down the weather balloons to find the most barebones copies possible. Maybe something like the Halo Reach Beta disks Microsoft gave out to people to test the new dis format and dashboard.

Speaking of which I still have yet to reedem my free downloadable copy MS gave me to replace this disk. Anyone know if those things expire?

I'd complain, but I'm not going to lie; if I managed to find a copy of this game flying in the air (way ahead of the release date, no less), my mind would pretty much be blown from excitement overload.

So, for the next Uncharted/Tomb Raider/whatever game, could we have a It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World style competition? Bury a copy of the game in the middle of nowhere, release it's whereabouts online, and let the carnage begin.
