Another thing I just noticed is that apparently the WiFi version does NOT have the GPS module installed, is that true? Sounds quite bizzare - GSM is only an addition to standard GPS, not an integral part of the system.
It is true, it's not like you can do much with GPS without online access anyway. The main of use the GPS would most likely be Near, and that needs online data.
If the GPS is going to be used innovatively in the games, I imagine it's only going to be a DSi plus sort of experience, where there are a few extra features in the game if you have a 3G+GPS model.
Well, I do hope there will be features like that - it's just innovative and definatelly fun, especially considering it's a handheld, and you're supposed to walk around with those anyways. GPS-based bonuses would be a good reason to take gamers "outside" of their grotos, much like StreetPass.
I don't think that using a GPS without being online is pointless - what about navigation programs etc.? With those, the only reason to be online is to check the traffic, which is dodgy anyways so nobody really uses it all that much. Most of my GPS-equipped devices have a SIM slot, yet I don't recall ever using them in Online mode.
