Hi Everyone, this is Karl Jones (Lead Designer) and Stuart Tilley (Game Director) of WipEout 2048 for PS Vita.

The new WipEout game is our biggest and most adventurous ever, with loads of awesome new stuff for you to get your hands on come February 22nd. But almost every game has at least one cool feature that sadly finds its way to the cutting room floor, and WipEout 2048 is no exception L. Earlier this year we prototyped a new (hidden) game mode called ZOMBIE.

Now, this is WipEout, so our zombies were never going to be the sluggish, lumbering, flesh-eaters you’re familiar with. These are 1000mph steel and carbon fibre machines of menacing evil, and they want you dead…

The rules of ZOMBIE were simple enough – survive the horror for as long as possible by avoiding or taking out the Zombie ships. You start in darkness, alone on the track. Then you hear them in the distance, the digital scream of their engines filling you with dread. They start to show up on your Zombie radar, a handful at first in hot pursuit and full of ominous darkness. Then they’re on you, ramming you, destroying themselves if need be, but they’re taking you with them. You can pick up Cannons and the occasional (but very rare) Quake to defend yourself, but it’s only going to delay the inevitable – you will die. As time goes by, more and more Zombie ships appear, becoming more and more aggressive, until you are surrounded by a swarm of carbon-clad deliverers of Armageddon, and that’s before a Zombie Mother-ship even shows up…shudder!

Our prototypes showed that it was a lot of fun to flee from a horde of terrifying Zombie ships, but ZOMBIE was just one of a number of cool modes in prototype. In the final reckoning, we made the call to put Zombie mode on the back burner. That said, like a real-life Zombie, ZOMBIE mode is dead, but it’s not completely dead. ;)

ZOMBIE mode won’t be in WipEout 2048, but we’ve still got loads of great game modes sprinkled in amongst our awesome Races. Head to Head, Speed Lap, Zone Mode, Time Trial and Combat events – every one of them with its own online leaderboard so you can fight for position against your friends and even the rest of the world.

That’s all from us for now. Don’t have nightmares.

I guess this whole "Every game is getting/has/would've had a zombie mode" thing is true.

Can't say I care about Wipeout though, I tried it on the PSP and didn't like it all. It feels like there's much stronger racing games at launch with Motorstorm RC and ModNation Racers.

WipEout is soooo much better than those.

It felt really boring and uninteresting. I generally don't like racing games unless they're (good) kart racers, Motorstorm, or Burnout. I can't stand anything hyper realistic for racing and F-Zero can really put me to sleep. Wipeout just felt really boring.

I still secretly hope for a WipEout 3DS game.

Also, zombies driving racing ships/zombie racing ships = wat
Sadly, that will NEVER happen.

I don't like WipEout. It felt very unrealistic and weird. Not really fond on racing games anyway.

I liked Wipeout a lot more than MNR on the PSP, MNR just felt clunky and a bad rip-off Mario Kart. Hopefully it's better this time around on Vita....
Motorstorm on the PSP was great, better than Wipeout even!
This mode seems cool, hopefully we get it in free DLC.

I enjoyed Wipeout on the PSP more then Mod Nation Racers, and I never really liked the Motorstorm games. If I want to play a kart racing game, that's why we have Mario Kart, Mod Nation Racers is a poor rich mans Mario Kart, except Mario Kart is actually good. Motorstorm feels like a poorly designed rip off of Dirt. If you want a good racing game on the PSP, play Gran Turismo, at least it's more realistic.

I felt the same about MNR the first time I played it but it's better on the second run. Don't know why or how but it seems to be better when you try it a second time around. Nothing exceptional and I wouldn't say the racing is better than Mario Kart but the creation suite is rather amazing and the racing is passable.

Kart games still don't have shit on Crash Team Racing though. Give me a solid Crash Team Racing remake with online functions at least and I'll be set for the next ten years on kart racing.

I gave it another chance and it was enjoyable for 2 hours but then I grew tired of it, the gaming mechanics just don't feel right. It had some good aspects where it definitely beat Mario Kart, but if the core mechanics don't add up, it fails.
I really hope they release a better version for the Vita, Mario Kart 7 is just about the only thing that I really really want, OoT will be enjoyable too but MK7 will keep me coming back for a loooooooong time.

Not enjoyed a Wipeout since the PSX days...when I was playing these on PC ;)

This mode however would definitely get me to play the latest one, it sounds really interesting. I would prefer if there was a new Motorstorm on the Vita, the PSP one was awesome.

Of course I would completely ignore either for a new F-Zero game.
