So I'm not sure why this keeps happening, but it's getting a bit annoying.

Basically every time I run either the NES, VBA or SNES emulator in the HBC, it goes for a few seconds and then it "freezes". Not the kind where everything stops and whatnot, but rather the game keeps running but no controller input is registered, and the wii has to be hard reset because none of the system buttons does anything either. After running each emu, they keep on making new folders inside the roms directory called "super nintendo.roms" and the likes, even though I have everything organized already.

I tried formatting the SD and using another brand, but keeps on happening no matter what I do. Is this a HBC problem or is my stuff jacked in some way?

Hi, is your wii connected to the internet? If not then this could produce the problem, then you could try to use a forwarder channel instead of the homebrew channel to boot them.

So I should hook the Wii up to the internet? That's the issue? I don't really want to bother with channel forwards and stuff, don't want to clutter up the system menu

Hey! I have the exact same problem on Snes9xGx and with a USB hard drive! Am I supposed to delete "no_ios_reload" and then turn off the internet, or do I keep it on?
iirc if you remove the no_ios_reload it wont work anymore because the emus need ahbprot. The internet needs to be on.
@corey89:
Yep, should help.

Why have people in the past been telling me to delete it then? I'll give that a shot, but I thought it was the emulator not liking this particular USB HDD for some odd reason.

Ugh, I know it has been answered for the umpteenth time, but screw it, it will never work on my HDD anyways. Delete the line from the xml file, turn on the internet connection, make the HBC load from a USB device, load Snes9xGx from a forwarder or the HBC, launch game, emulator locks up randomly blah, blah, blah. Forget it. I'm sick of it, I'm sick of this being the only sodding emulator that crashes on my HDD despite it being "compatible" with most if not all wii homebrew programs. People can give me advice over and over again for this particular program, but nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever get it work without it giving me hell. I've tried everything from all the advice that was gracefully given to me, formatting the HDD with FAT32, xml editing, turning on/off the internet and WiiConnect24, launching it from HBC versus a forwarder (which makes no difference), re-hacking all the mods for the Wii from scratch using ModMii, recreating the folders/directories from scratch, the list goes on. Why this is the only program that gives me these issues, I don't know. FceuGX, VbaGX, GenplusGX all use the same libogc library and are able to use USB devices for storage, can they not? They're very stable and I rarely see them crash,. I give up. The whole asking-for-help-on-getting-this
-emulator-to-work-off-a-hard-drive idea might as well be flushed straight down to hell for all I care.

Again, I'm not ungrateful for the help that was given to me, it's just I feel horrible for you guys giving me help only to have the help be in vain since nothing works for me getting this to work. SDHC? Works fine. HDD? No such luck.

I'd prefer to use the ones with the 1.52 audio core changes (i absolutely hate non-synchronized audio emulation); it sounds too much like Zsnes. Why 4.2.8 runs more stable off an SDHC card, I'll never know. I've asked numerous times for help with this issue, I've followed every step you guys have suggested, and from the looks of it, it will be a very cold day in Hell before Snes9xGx runs off my HDD, which, ironically, is the very same HDD (model/make) dborth uses for his emulators. Am I so damned as to never run it off this MyPassport HDD?

Not all "My Passport" drives are alike. The latest ones who are usb 3.0 compatible never worked as they should in my case.
Even disabling the spindown doesn't work properly.
If I connect it to a pc and leave it untouched for a while, the hd led becomes steady on, and the disk stops rotating.
I tried the software that comes with it to disable auto spindown, and finally gave up on it.
Some members claim it works fine with the cios, others say it needs power for a couple of seconds before it is properly recognised.
Point is, "WD passport" simply isn't enough information to describe the thing.

The disk NEVER spins down when it isn't supposed to neither does it go into sleep mode (firmware settings). Yes, this is a "USB 3.0 drive" but every other program I launch via forwarder or HBC loads perfectly fine.

Programs that work perfectly -
GenplusGX (only seen it crash twice in the two years I used it, with or w/o using an HDD)
FceuGX
VbaGX
ModMii
ShowMiiWads
USB LoaderGX
CFG USB Loader
Descent Wii
Wii64 (USB modded version)
WiiSX (USB modded version)

Programs that are jacked up -
Snes9x
WiiMC

What do both these programs have in common? They both crash randomly, while doing seemingly normal things, like, listening to MP3s or loading Snes ROMs. Why out of all programs, this had to be the one that has sporadic/random crashing is beyond me. It's not like I can switch it with a new HDD since I'm way past the return grace period, and besides, it was a birthday gift. Funny thing is, it worked fine for five or so days, then BAM! it froze at the savestate menu, in fact, I noticed that the least several times it crashed, it was always at the save/load state menu, right after I load or make a savestate. Again, I will not use pre-4.2.5 versions before the 1.52 core was added, I don't like, neither can I tolerate its resemblance to Zsnes in terms of audio emulation.

I have my reasons for getting Western Digital and not something else like Lacie or Toshiba. WD makes some very reliable hard drives (the two PCs I have right now, both have had them for over three years and not a single issue).
