You should never downgrade any Wii, that's just stupid. But they are the exact same software-wise as every other Wii, there is no difference in what will work compared to a regular (recent) Wii.

they can be modded like any other wii, yes. but the lack of gamecube controller ports pretty much mean that you will not be able to restore a nand backup you make with bootmii. it is still a good idea to create one. but youll have to wait for somebody else to come up with a solution for restoring that backup and just try your bestest not to brick your wii until then.

You can mod them like any other just like giantpune said. I did one yesterday. It's the Just Dance 3 black wii bundle without gamecube support. No problems. Used modmii and installed all of the files. You can restore nand backups using the buttons on the Wii itself though. Hope that helps you out.

I wonder what nintendos solution for getting into recovery mode is without the gamecube controller or memory card ports, or did they just completely through it out the window? I wonder if boot1 or boot2 has it's own special version that checks the SD card or disc drive for the presence of a magic file or disc of some sort.

if you can access BootMii/IOS there is always a better way to fix than to restore a NAND dump, seeing as being able to run BootMii/IOS means you must be able to run homebrew. And if you brick in a way BootMii/IOS can't be accessed, a GC controller wouldn't have helped anyway.

No you can't. BootMii can't be installed as boot2 on new Wiis, and to restore a NAND dump in BootMii/IOS, you need to enter the Konami Code on a GC controller.

The solder points for the ports are still there, so they could probably pop off the case and connect it up anyway. Also, apparently one of the memory card ports is replaced by some sort of connection (perhaps a serial port of some sort? haven't seen pictures of it, just read that it's there). Perhaps that has something to do with it.

Or it could be something like you suggest. Or perhaps a special USB device.

1. Unscrew GC controller/memory card cover
2. Plug in waikiki v2 (or whatever it's called) into the new port in the memory card slot
3. ???
4. Profit.

What I'd like to see on the mobo is if there is unpopulated header spaces for the GC controller and memory cards, or if the motherboard is completely new revision. So far I haven't been able to find any pics or anyone else who has torn one apart yet.

The solderpoints are still there. Just one memory slot is replaced by something else (dunno what, dont care lol).
I bet you can just solder back the GC ports and you have a Wii thats identical to the old models.
