Japan makes a true 3D projector

I've watched the video and listened to it, I'm just not impressed by the final effect. I choose the second method by comparison.

I mentioned liquids mainly because this effect is easier to achieve in them. Air is still rather "blerght" as we can see in the forementioned video.

The idea is to immitate a 3D object, and in that department, the latter "projector" simply "looks better".

Why so serious Spinal, why so serious? :P

There are far more impressive holograms out there, I see no reason to be excited by a green laser one. In fact, I posted a hologram that I find more amusing and impressive. Rather than engaging in a meaningful conversation and actually talk on-topic you prefere to lecture me saying "boo-hoo, you didn't watch the video and I diiiid!". Well, congratulations, now seeing that you have nothing else to say, leave in shame.

If I am to choose between a monochromatic hologram that flickers at 15 FPS, burns my eyes and only shows very limited shapes and a hologram that shows fully textured high-quality colour 3D models BUT has to be a glass jar, then mind you, I want an awesome glass jar rather than a crappy green flashlight. I'll be excited when they have an awesome flashlight, but for now I want my jar. Is that so hard to understand?

They aren't 3D. They're 2D images reflected off of the semi-reflective glass so that they appear to float in midair.

The basic idea of a hologram is to create an illusion of 3D, neither of those machines actually creates a 3D object, it's all a play on lights.

Still, the green flashlight thing creates an actual 3D contour (with depth) while the glass jar thing dangles a 2D cutout in front of you. The jar thing looks better (but that's hardly surprising, as it's a relatively old and perfected technology), I was just correcting you about its 3D-ity. Call me pedantic :P
 
I see what you mean, hehe. However, do note that the jar consists of several "walls", so looking at it from different directions actually shows a different "cut-out", creating quite a convincing illusion.

You should not only watch the video, but read the subtitles.
 
I can't wait until 2064 when this gets used in a way that I can afford/appreciate.
 
It looks like Japan may be our only hope for this technology to be developed further.

So yeah, seems pretty cool. It's obviously far, far away from perfection, but a start is a start.
 
haha, holo. very misleading title. 3D projector? it's a holo projector.

holo's still too early then, i guess. i was kinda hoping by now that there'd be significant enough of a progress to start small-scale approaches for entertainment.
 
if you guys think this is going to be perfected in a few years and ready for the ps4 etc think again it will take up to 10 years to get this ready for the market and even when that happens it's only gonna be used for signage at 1st. be a long time before you see this in tv's.

that actually depends on how much resources (money, manpower) can be funnelled into research. the more resources invested, the faster the tech advances. it's just a matter of who is willing to invest and by how much.
 
I don't think this method will be available in 10 or even 20 years for any sort of home use. I watched a different video of it explaining that the 'in air' version uses insanely powerful lasers to plasmarise the air. The fact that it takes 6,000 to 15,000 volts to light a neon/xenon sign, suggests that much more power is required to light air particles. This technology will never pas any safety tests, it's basically lighting floating around the room.

But neon signs don't use a lot of power. They require a high voltage but only a very low current, and a neon sign actually doesn't use a lot of power. Neon lights are pretty energy efficient. You can't compare the two.

And it's not like the fact a device is a brain-melting death ray ever stopped a gizmo from being used in homes. I mean, just look at microwave ovens :ha:
