The news that Nintendo's 3DS launch was underwhelming and didn't go quite as well as planned is, in all senses, old news - and everyone's kind of tired of hearing about it. So, uhh, what if I were to, you know... take that old news and flip it on its head? It looks like industry analysts of the NPD Group are predicting that the Nintendo 3DS will surpass the first-year sales of the Nintendo DS - the widely-popular handheld that had come before the 3DS (in case you'd been living under a Goron the last decade and you had absolutely no idea). The numbers are revealing that, in eight months, the 3DS has sold 1.65 million units in the U.S. - by no means a bad effort. And with the Christmas season rolling around in a couple of seconds, we can only be sure that the handheld's numbers will receive another boost. We've got a few more statistics below.

According to the the NPD Group the Nintendo 3DS is about to surpass the first year sales of the immensely popular Nintendo DS. After eight months on the market the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 1.65 million units in the United States. Heres some other impressive figures to get your head round:
  • Nintendo sold more than 675,000 combined hardware units in October. This includes more than 250,000 units of Nintendo 3DS, nearly 250,000 Wii systems and nearly 180,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems.
  • For the year, Nintendo has sold a combined 7 million hardware units and more than 55 million units of software have been sold for Nintendo platforms. Both of these numbers should increase with the Nov. 20 launch of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii.
  • Both Wii, up 8 percent year over year, and Nintendo DS, up 23 percent over the previous month, demonstrated strong momentum heading into their respective sixth and eighth holiday seasons. In total, the two platforms have sold more than 87 million combined hardware units and more than 540 million combined units of software in the United States.

if this happens witch is looking like it will nintendo just solidify their number 1 spot in the handheld race RIP vita

It's not fair to compare the 3DS to a system that isn't even out anywhere. Though i'm glad the 3DS is selling well!

I already see this coming actually, the 3DS has a lot of potential (despite all the hate)

With Mario 3D and the Ice White 3ds coming, it's pretty obvious that sales will increase during Christmas season. Hopefully, it'll interest more devs into making some quality 3ds titles. ^_^

But I can't help but mention region lock on every 3ds related thread. ;_;
Hopefully, we'll have a hack that will make 3ds region free.

I don't get the slider pad hate either, nor do I get why it needs a second analogue. I believe it's potent enough to profit Ninty, as long as the 3ds sales catch the devs' eyes.

But... but the region lock... ;_;

I always thought the 3DS was going to just up and boom in sales. It's a fantastic handheld. And I'm still going to stick with my thought of;

everybody who bitched about the 3DS, hasn't even tried it. Just going with what the internet is saying.

Until I'm proven otherwise, I'm sticking with that. Also, the fact that this is happening, isn't surprising. Well actually it is, but it shouldn't. If people did their research instead of just going "lol 3DS suxorz and nobody is buying it", they would have known that the 3DS is selling better than the DS did in the first few months. It's a shame we live in a world where people think they can get by by doing half a job.

See? The 3ds not selling was exaggerated. ^_^

I agree. Some of my friends who thought the 3DS sucked? I took them to best buy to play with the demo unit... Their reaction was priceless! They're all hyped up for the Vita, as well. That is something I'm willing to play with before I buy it. To me, though? It looks far off from a portable system. Very clunky design (again). So, I don't know. Don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing on it. How can I? It's not even out yet. >.<

Anyway, I'm still hoping to get a 3DS here soon. Hoping the Zelda edition comes soon, as well. ;)

Not surprised, but glad to hear it. I'm older than most people here (by far) and remember the DS's slow start very well. I'm usually an early adopter and I put off buying it until Mario Kart came out (still have my red DSphat from the MKDS bundle, though the stickers and strap are long gone). Back then, as now, everyone had the same complaint ... where are the games? And great stuff was still coming out on GBA too. And I remember the PSP pre-launch hype too. Yeah, it was gonna crush the DS. Yep.

The 3DS is getting Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, already has great games like Zelda: OoT and there is much more to come.
Plus there is christmas coming up with MK7 and SM3D.
The 3DS got a price drop.
So the 3DS is no doubt going to get HEAPS of sales.
I can't wait to get mine.

It makes sense that the 3DS would be able to surpass DS sales from a first-year comparison. The DS came out in late November for NA and early December for JP, so while it had hooked into the holiday season at release, it didn't have a whole lot to offer either. It wasn't until that time the following year when it began to surge. The 3DS has the advantage of having been released earlier in the calendar year, and getting the MUST HAVE titles like SM3DL and MK7 earlier in the 3DS's first year while also being during the holiday season.

As much as people have said that Nintendo made a poor decision in releasing the 3DS when it did, this information alone shows how logical a decision it was.

I've been enjoying my 3DS a lot since March when I bought it. All I've heard from people is "3DS has no games", well I'm enjoying all of the games that I have so i don't care what others say.

You sir, have all the money I never have.

I also played a demo of Super Mario 3D, I played 1-1, and yes it was fucking amazing. :D
I'm thinking of camping out at Toys R Us, to finish the game before even the release but they probably will kick me out. :)

I haven't had a chance to play Super Mario 3D Land yet, but I have it preordered and will be picking it up tomorrow. I actually already got my preorder bonus tanooki mario keychain today when I was in picking up Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7.

Yeah, and apparently no good games have come out yet ;D
