I've got Sonic Generations, Need for speed Hot pursuitand other similar games.
And all these games lag (I play them on my dad's computer but I'd prefer to have them on my laptop).
My dad says that sometimes reinstalling windows can result in major speed boost (since the registry gets empty).
I'm asking will reinstalling windows result in a speed boost in games?
My specs:
video card:ATI Mobility Radaeron HD 4570 (512 mb) (I think it's powerfull enough to handle these games)
processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL 64 (2.1Ghz) (I believe here's the problem)
4 GB RAM
I'm running windows 7.
And Sonic Generations' minimal specs are:
Microsoft Windows 7/Vista/XP Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 (2×2.0GHz) or AMD equivalent 2GB RAM (Windows 7/XP)/3GB RAM (Windows Vista) NVIDIA GeForce 8800 / ATI Radeon HD 2900 11 GB free hard drive space, which my laptop shuld handle without lag!

I'll reinstall everything+ delete everything.
I just want to know if I could play at least sonic generations at full speed.(at minimal settings)

Reinstalling should give you a slight boost but nothing amazing .
The specs given are for pcs & laptop versions of cpus & graphic cards tend to be weaker so your laptop spec is a bit below the minimum for sonic generation so I doubt you will be able to play it full speed but go ahead and reinstall your windows it will help a bit .

I really think that my processor is the problem (but it says Amd equivalent to Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 (2×2.0GHz) and my processor is 2x2.1 Ghz)
(Also my graphics card is quite powerfull and it's supposed to run the game at minimal specs).
Also if my processor is the problem could overclocking it to a certain speed play the game well.

no, but deleting sys32 should do the trick.

When i had my Windows box, i would reinstall windows once a year. open registry tends to get cluttered and needs a cleaning so i just wipe and start over.

I'm going to delete absolutely everyting.
Also will a 32-bit windows play the games better or 64-bit.

sys32 was a joke lol

Also i have no idea about the 32 or 64 all i know is that you need different versions of stuff to work on their respective version.

Actually your graphic card isn't that powerful . It is decent but over 2 years old & not really strong enough for this games . Add that to your processor & you won't be able to run this games that is full of fast movements even in low settings .

As for 32 bit or 64 bit install 64 bit . 32 bit windows won't be able to use all you RAM so it will cause even more slow down .

doh.
And what if I overclock my processor. But I heard it's bad for a laptop. Oh well-back to playing new games only on the wii.

why? why? Snoo-ping *gets shot in the head*

Since you have 4gb RAM 64bit will do.
With 64bit you can play games like a pro.

Honestly...

The speed boost gained from reinstalling windows depends on one thing: what you have installed/running that is slowing down your laptop. Laptops usually come with manufacturer bloatware, so that's where to start looking, but anti virus software, a myriad of updater software, some DRM or anti-hacking software for games, media player schedules (maintaining the library by searching for new songs)......... I could go on listing things that slow down your laptop, but I'll just stop. That's all software, but that's not your problem.

Fun fact: a GeForce 8600 GT and 8600 GT Mobility are not the same. The Mobility edition is usually a cut back version to reduce power draw/heat produced, and usually gets paired with custom cooling kits for a laptop form factor. Sometimes it might not even be the same GPU (it might just be a rebranded 8400 GS, for instance).

Real issue: The Mobility HD 4570 (mid ranged mobile ATI graphics, 2 generations old) will not be as powerful as a HD 2900 (high end desktop ATI graphics, 4 generations old). Just to use one of the specs (and this should not be taken as a direct measure of performance), the HD 2900 has 320 stream processors, the HD4600 Series has 320, the HD4550 has 80, and your Mobility HD4570 has 80 stream processors. I've not even mentioned clock speeds or texture fill rates, but this should give you an idea of how weak your laptop actually is.

And don't get me started on Athlon 64.

So are you saying that with a 64-bit windows 7 I can play the games at a good speed?

I doubt your laptop allows overclocking but if it does it usually will be killing your laptop at a rapid speed .
The processor will be really hot & the laptop fan will be running full speed to try to cool it down till one or both of them eventually die .

To add, the difference between 64bit and 32bit is one can use 4GB of RAM or more. Some older games and applications have compatibility issues, but I've not encountered many games that I can't find a workaround for. Even Zork Nemesis works on my Windows 7 x64 laptop (Core 2 Duo T7500, GeForce 8600M). For newer games, it will have no effect on speed whatsoever. Games generally don't use more than 2GB of RAM anyway, with probably Civilisation being the exception.

Laptops generally cannot I've lock at all (BIOS locked). This makes sense because laptops generally run very hot as it is, and have very limited cooling. Pushing it any further is guaranteed to burn something (such as your lap). And since we're already here, I'll just add that AMD laptop CPUs run very hot - even when compared to Intel.

Rage on, friend!

When will this raging end I don't know.
But I'll try. My laptop needed a reinstall anyways.

You definitely won't be able to overclock the processor. Even if you could, as Originality's already pointed out; it's really -not a good idea- Furthermore, there are certain limits provided through the amount of power your power-adapter/cord can provide (how much, how fast, etc). Most laptops do not have a very good cooling system ~ there are a few that do, but among those that overclock, they're all primarily 17'' laptops with unlocked intel processors (which are extremely expensive). Ah yes, my thoughts were re-confirmed, AMD processors do run hot in my experience as well.

Defragmenting the HDD, using a registry cleaner, & tweaking the MSConfig (So that the start-up is faster) are a few things users should do every couple months. Generally, you're not going to get a huge performance boost on an old system unless you're clogged up with Spyware/Adware/Malware.

You can't upgrade many components in a main-stream laptop beyond the HDD & RAM. Most of the time the processors and GPU's are soldered onto the motherboards. Even if they're not, the cost of upgrading them is often extremely inefficient (in that buying a new machine is even sometimes, more cost-efficient).

If you want to run modern games, You'd best try turning the resolution down to the lower/minimal settings.
