was asked to make a ghosting fix for SMT IV, so here it is. This likely can be ported to anything that uses this engine from 3ds (maybe other atlas games?). Bit of a more annoying one vs the last pokemon one, but slowly getting better, as are my debugging tools. if you run into any bugs lmk, or if other atlas games need this patch port it yourself or dm me, ill get around to it eventually.

Can't believe it took me this long to find this. Just so happened to run into this right as I'm trying to reverse engineer the sprite animation routine for Apocalypse for the shits and giggles.

Not sure if these have been tested on hardware, so I took the opportunity to try this out on my own unit.

This is SMTIV Apocalypse USA on N3DS 11.17 Luma 13.3.2 - Screenshots taken with Rosalina.

It's kind of embarrassing how bad it looks on real hardware without the code. What were they thinking?

Yeah it's mad, I thought it looked okay on 3ds originally but after using the codes it's looks so much better, never knew anything about bloom or ghosting on it until this thread, great work done here.

It's probably not super noticeable on a non-XL 3DS but it's definitely one of those things you can't unsee once you notice. Who knows how many other 3DS games are this bad, even the Pokémon games at 10xIR weren't this headache-inducing.

Yeah I never knew it existed until I saw this thread and tried the codes out of curiosity it's great work. It would be great if there were codes to activate master mode difficulty straight away on fresh save file or always neutral alignment I know there is ways around it on emulators or save editing but be nice have cheat codes to use on 3ds hardware.

I don't know how to translate CE addresses into 3DS cheats but I know what my alignment is right now, the next time I get a choice I'll post the address for the value and someone smarter than me can figure out the rest.

I actually did also reverse engineer the location of the alignment in the save data for IV Apocalypse. It should still be in my notes somewhere.

Was working on an alignment editor webpage that was a fork of a tool someone on reddit made; but full time work at the time kinda knocked it in the back burner, was about to implement the actual file modification routine before i put it on hiatus and i even made custom art from the sprites and like an alignment slider and everything. Kinda overkill in retrospect but it was fun to do as a side project. https://github.com/The-NinToaster/SMT4-Alignment-Editor. The website doesnt work tho i didn't get far enough and kind of got sidelined in the dynamic-ness of the site and see how far i could push it on plain js and jquery.

That being said, did you happen to catch the actual alignment location while the game is running? I've always kind of wanted to make like an overlay for smtiv/a with data like alignment and other debug stuff maybe as my first serious homebrew project lol but only picked up actually reverse engineering the game in the last month after being laid off lol

i played smtiv and apocalypse on my n3ds xl and i will say that the ghosting isn't super severe outside of the undergound other than the fairy forest. In 3D mode the effect is more subdued too. That being said, after a while it strains your eyes lmao. The subway stations really are the biggest offenders for the tinted bloom and ghosting
