The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct recap, Ocarina of Time remake release date revealed

After being announced last week, the first of two broadcasts is set to go live later today with a stark focus on The Legend of Zelda and its 40th anniversary celebrations. According to a tweet from the Japanese Nintendo account, we'll be seeing more details on the Ocarina of Time remake, alongside various bits of non-gaming media. This most likely hints at a bit more information on the upcoming movie, but could potentially be more.

With me working through the presentation itself, I figured I'd get a thread up early to give you folks a place to discuss, with the intent to update it when I get home with all the key bits of information. Is there anything you're hoping to see? Any particular wants for the upcoming remake? Let us know your thoughts.

Now, here we are in 2026 with a brand new remake made from the ground-up, and Hyrule Field is STILL empty. How is this ok?
I know it's rhetorical, but my 2 cents is that the influencers and clout-mongers on YT are only partly to blame for this. It really comes from a general de-intellectualization of gamers as a demographic post-COVID.

People forget that the Switch rightly got 7/10 when it came out, the performance and games were criticized, as was the lack of new IPs. It wasn't until COVID made it explode in popularity to millions of people who had no serious knowledge of or standards for Nintendo that the company became completely complacent.

When they announced the jump button, I mistakenly got excited, thinking that SURELY this meant when they opened up on Hyrule Field, it would be a massive, completely new overworld rich in terrains, characters, settlements, and tasks, a true revision of what that field meant when it was first made, to match a dramatic change in controls, not just a recreation of what it was.

When they showed it in its greasy 1:1 Unreal Engine glory, my stomach dropped. What a sad result of 40 years of passion.

Man I think I need a break from the internet, all people know how to do is criticize all the time.

It looks fine, and who knows maybe there is new content but at this point I'm happy to replay a childhood game that looks like how it felt at the time.

And mind you I think its okay to criticize, as I criticize things I love but it looks fine, it's just nitpicking at this point. I bet if it were more of a reimagining than remake people would complain about that too so yeah just can't win I guess.

I was expecting at least an expanded map, with new areas to explore.

Am I the only one here that think the 3DS version is best-looking version?

I appreciate these are "better graphics" but I don't think they suit the game and I don't think they have any character of their own.
The 3DS remastered graphics are definitely much more faithful to the original N64.

If people don't like the NS2 remake, well, just don't play it. I skipped Star Fox 64 HD because I didn't really like the graphics.

Okay... I'm impressed with the remake.

The only thing I'm disappointed with is that it didn't end with a Majora's mask jingle or Skull Kid laugh at the end, with a vague "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask remake is now in development." against a plain black background.

I'll do you one better. The 3DS version had some of the best 3D on that console, underrated way to enjoy OOT.

I just wish they didn't fuck up the lighting in some shots, but ya, I like the 3DS art style. I think the OOT remake for Switch 2 looks fine, and I'll probably get it one day, but I'm not rushing out to buy a Switch 2 for it. Still waiting for that OLED Switch 2. lol

Also, random flex! I own OOT on N64(the gold cart!) and I for some reason own the Japanese version, because it came with an N64 I bought off eBay for cheap. And I own OOT on 3DS physically, because we used to hack our 3DS with OOT. lol

What I'm loving about this remake is the animation quality. I think this would feel a lot more lifeless and "Unreal Engine remake" if it wasn't for the whimsical and detailed animation on every character and blade of grass. The world feels "bouncy" if that makes sense. Goes a long way to making the game feel like what I remembered the original being.

OOT is on my top 10 games of all time list and IMO this feels like a faithful visual refresh. I don't think you can quite go 1:1 with remaking such an old game (see: FF7 Remake for another example), the best remakes to me modernize and reinterpret so it feels like what the original looked like to you at the time. Definitely getting that with this.

Unreal engine is the worst thing that's ever happened to videogames.

Nintendo we need to add rain effects, and real wetness to the models, but it'll cost and an extra 2 million or so to get the effects done properly. So what should we do and 2 million is the maximum we'll need, we'll make it up in sales, when the game releases for $80 to $90.

Nintendo's solution: I'm not giving you 2 Million, the sorry fans will buy anything!
Use this instead...

If I had (or were myself) an 8 to 12 year old kid, I wouldn't hesitate to give them this as their first experience with Ocarina of Time.

But I don't need it.
