The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct recap, Ocarina of Time remake release date revealed

After being announced last week, the first of two broadcasts is set to go live later today with a stark focus on The Legend of Zelda and its 40th anniversary celebrations. According to a tweet from the Japanese Nintendo account, we'll be seeing more details on the Ocarina of Time remake, alongside various bits of non-gaming media. This most likely hints at a bit more information on the upcoming movie, but could potentially be more.

With me working through the presentation itself, I figured I'd get a thread up early to give you folks a place to discuss, with the intent to update it when I get home with all the key bits of information. Is there anything you're hoping to see? Any particular wants for the upcoming remake? Let us know your thoughts.

Was hoping for a re-imagining rather than just a new coat of paint, especially since they're charging $60/$70. But it's one of my all-time favorite games, so I'm willing to get it if it's available for $60 physical. I guess the triforce on Young Link's hand was just an oversight and didn't mean anything.

Looks like an exceptionally faithful remake. The visuals look gorgeous. I'm excited to see how the environments look in the new engine, and especially interested what they do with the scarier/gloomier sections (Shadow Temple, ReDeads, adult Link Castle Town, etc). I can't remember the last time I bought a new AAA game, but if this one sticks the landing I think I'd enjoy it!

The graphics look nice (mostly), but there are zero risks being taken. For a game that was already remade pretty much perfectly on 3DS, this should have been a full reimagining OR it should have been at the same time as the announcement of a new game, even a small one. Zelda Maker. BOTW Picross. Zelda Roguelite GBC Adventure. SOMETHING.

I've played Ocarina of Time. I've replayed it. I've played the remake. I've played the Master Quest. I'm not playing an Unreal Engine 5 reskin.

Why does everything look wet and shiny In the OOT remake? It's like it was thrown into Unreal Engine 5

Nothing like the 40th anniversary being celebrated by.... doing the same game.

Was hoping we'd get a 3rd new game as an actual sequel to Majora's Mask. Absolutely the most safest and low risk product they could have done.

And it will sell millions

We've been seeing similar projects attempted by single creators on YouTube for years, so seeing that it's a 1:1 reskin and not an actual reimagining is a real gut punch for anyone who actually cares about the series and the art of game design in general.

And yes. Link looks very greasy to me as well.

I'm just hoping there'll be bonus content. Those challenges you need the mobile app for don't count.

Since they fleshed out the castle town, that would be a good place to put some new sidequests. OoT didn't have very many of them.

I'm quite sad that Hyrule Field looks so empty. They added some extra details here and there, but they could've done a lot more. The only reason the N64's Hyrule Field was so empty was due to technical limitations. Since they have the power, and the opportunity to do something with it, they should have done the original developers' intentions justice by making it feel just as grand now as it did back on the N64. Anything else is a huge missed opportunity.

This looked great, and I can't wait! :D
The direct itself was not that great, since I expected more... but I'm happy with what was shown.

I am glad the European stream had the Japanese voice over with subtitles in English.

Nintendo once again proves how out-of-touch they are.

Hyrule Field being a giant open area with nothing in it is one of the most common criticisms of the original game. It was excusable at the time, since just having a big open area to explore in 1998 was novel and exciting, and the N64 didn't have the power to render too much else and still keep that size. When Twilight Princess came out, that was no longer an excuse, so again, its big empty fields got the game a lot of criticism.

Now, here we are in 2026 with a brand new remake made from the ground-up, and Hyrule Field is STILL empty. How is this ok?

didn't notice this. so you think its paint of coat on top of the original ?
When he said we kept the load screens for nostalgia, I was like WTF? That's lazy AF, means they didn't make the extra efforts to make seamless transistions.
