How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

I'm against high component prices, high electricity prices and datacenter pollution.

Whats the point in coding an app if you code it in a way that prices your users out of a computer?

I'm OK with locally run AI as it's much less destructive, as long as it's only an aid and a human is still using their brain.
And in case you're actually curious, Here's a video on Nvidia's New Best Friend Palantir, an article on an upcoming Nashville bill & xAI's datacenter pollution rates as well as people's electricity bills rising due to nearby centers, and a video from More Perfect Union on what xAI's centers are doing to Memphis
This is literally the definition of "not my problem".

All of these are economic side effects of a bubble. Rich people will always chase big fish no matter where they lead and sometimes it gets to this point. AI, something that has quietly existed in some form for decades and only now been pushed, has absolutely nothing to do with it. Anything involving a computer, or any other non-computer machine, could have caused this. Including those render farms that artists use to make your favorite movies, and the datacenter that hosts this forum.

If you cared about the economy, you would be blaming the assholes rigging the systems in their favor.

If you cared about the environment, you would be wanting solar and nuclear plants installed.

Don't LARP with this concerned moral grandstanding if you can't even put in the effort to look honest.

An AI can keep precise record of where it acquired the data it utilized to generate something.
This is not how training data works, at least normally. I imagine it would be quite inefficient to tag all of the data this way, and pointless since the source's final contribution to the dataset wouldn't be recognizable.

If you are referring to the prompt, though, then yes.

AI is not better than him, only better than his hands. Maybe you have faster hands than him too.

PS: I said the same thing about calculator too. It sure beats counting by hand.

I think appropriate tags to acknowledge IA use would be great. As far as I'm concerned, AI is fine as an assisting tool for a human, it's when AI replaces the human that there is a problem.
You know what happens when companies merge? They do a sandwich merge: one layer of A, one layer of B, one layer of A, and so on, stacking on top of each other. What matters most is who ends up at the very top. Everyone below will have AI reporting to humans and humans reporting to AI. If you’re not near the top, you’ll probably end up reporting to some AI boss.

If you have an AI boss, you’re somewhat lucky if you’re an average Joe. The alternative is being out on the street.

AI for coding / html i dont mind since most languages are basically math and I wouldn't oppose a calculator. Just make sure that you test whatever you ship.

Ai for visual art is where I draw a line (all the puns intended).

What makes you think I haven't been doing and wanting those things until now? And what makes you think Toei Animation used a render farm to animate Transformers The Movie?

Okay. I care about what’s going on in Memphis because I’m black, myself. And I know eventually these things come for us all.
Way ahead of you on wanting solar & nuclear, and blaming the people rigging things in their favor (as shown by mentioning Nvidia & Palantir)

And that’s not what LARP means.

Every post you make seems to slide deeper and deeper into AI psychosis. That AI fiction you posted earlier was unreadable garbage. Just because an LLM can hallucinate it doesn’t make it true. You, much like Gamehopper, seemingly have no clue how this technology actually works. Get Grok’s dick out of your mouth and try reading a book.

If you think pointing out where AI is heading is “AI psychosis,” that says more about your reading comprehension than my posts. You’re free to disagree with the argument, but throwing insults at Grok, books, and anatomy doesn’t magically turn your opinion into a technical rebuttal.

I didn't quite expect 300 replies of arguing in fairness. Some productive replies mixed in there at least.
i wish that those that complain about the usage of AI would just grow a backbone personally. constructive discussion is better than agressive discussion, and for how hard people defend AI nowadays, its basically impossible to not have at least ONE of the latter.

sometimes, I personally wished more action can be done against it, because I genuinely think those that can't make an effort to have a constructive discussion on something that's as controversial as this should get penalized in some way. as someone who doesn't vibe with ai, its here to say; it ain't going anywhere (unless it pops to which i hope), but i swear, the aggressiveness of some people are off the charts: even if I say this, you'll have one person that'll register this response as me "crying" that ai is not leaving the world. that's how bad it is, when that's not what I'm saying at all, in the slightest.

Edit: At least this ain't Twitter. Thank GOODNESS its not Twitter, even.

No my technical rebuttals that you have routinely ignored are technical rebuttals. I’m not going to provide a technical rebuttal to AI hallucinated fan fiction.

I don't like what the internet is doing to hurt people either. I'm sure AI will do even worse. Not using internet is an extreme choice, same with AI in time to come. People used to talk about digital divide. In time people will be talking about AI divide.

Like it or not it is pretty much forced on everything these days.
Anything the big tech companies do these days are hardly avoidable, so it's now a case of getting with the times until everyone forgets about what they were arguing about.

I honestly don't care about anti-AI wars. Nothing that anybody will say will change their minds with how it is used.

As with all major changes that happen to humanity, the benefits won't be distributed equally among everyone.

As much as Oppenheimer regretted his work on the atomic bomb, there was nothing that could put the genie back in the bottle.

Is this a response to the wiicompiled backlash on the frontpage?

Thank you for saying this. It more succinctly sums up a major point that I was trying to make in my response a few pages ago. Regardless of what staff come up with for a long-term approach to covering AI-assisted projects, it needs to be supplemented with an effective approach for incentivizing constructive, actionable discussions about AI's impacts specifically in the scene rather than entrenched bickering. There's just too much tension surrounding the subject for large-scale, "broad impact" discussions to not devolve into ideological conflict and take up all of the air in the room.

To restate my own opinion on how to best deal with that, I personally feel that the forum would be better off keeping the conversation limited to the specific ways that AI damages specific projects. In other words, I feel that we'd all benefit from keeping the discourse centered around the project itself and keeping the broader subjects that err into off-topic territory in their appropriate channels. To your point though, I can also acknowledge that there's real reason to be concerned that people are simply too frustrated to reasonably moderate themselves. Unfortunately, I don't have a good solution for that that doesn't place the full burden of defining what crosses the line on the moderation team.

Is this a response to the wiicompiled backlash on the frontpage?
See Scarlet's post from yesterday:
It's just a reaction to the replies to the two threads Shaun put up yesterday, with the larger topic being on my mind due to my work.

I respect the notion to want to port x game to x platform for accessibility and what not, but I do not support vibe coding of any sort

because that can lead to potential bugs that the dev themselves probably don't know how to fix and then you're kinda just left with that unless someone else decides to pick it up.

Either way I don't think of anyone any less for vibecoding, as I understand coding in general can be intimidating, I just don't think the path of vibecoding is a very healthy way of experiencing learning how to code as there isn't much to learn or take away from it as you would learning organically.
It's like I said earlier: an actual programmer vibe coding, overseeing the output, testing, debugging, etc., is totally fine by me. He's using AI as just another tool, like an IDE, a static analyzer, a debugger, and so on.

Non-programmers vibe coding will produce "AI slop" because they won't be able to understand the code at all.

It's the same as someone who can't read or speak English using a translator to translate a text into English.

So maybe the question should be whether or not to disclose whether the creators/maintainers of such projects are actual programmers.

I suppose to add to that, it wasn't just those threads. It's something that's been in the back of my mind for a bit now. It's just those were the trigger that made me want to post this and get some wider feedback, along with a minor commitment to just make what information that is available on the topic for a given project accessible.
