If your virtual Wii (vWii) is corrupted, bricks on launch, or fails to boot and you don't have a nand backup, you can completely restore it to factory settings without needing a prior NAND backup.
I'm making this guide because I see how different people try to restore their vWii and face different errors when trying to restore it by using different tools, including, and mostly, vWii Decaffeinator, that should help but fails when people try to update the console.
You can trust this guide. I'm writing this by a personal experience and after I've restored my vWii six times.

The entire process takes about 15–30 minutes. 30–50 minutes for those who have isfshax installed.
If your vWii issues are not caused by a total brick, but instead involve the corruption of a specific IOS file or the System Menu, you may not need to resort to heavy-handed solutions like vWii Decaffeinator.

As of the August 2026 update (Version 2.0) developed by @zer00p, the vWii Compat Title Installer has been completely rewritten. Once a simple tool meant solely for installing the Homebrew Channel, it is now a comprehensive management and recovery suite for vWii that runs entirely from the Wii U environment (Aroma).
It is more recommended to use this tool as it is not only a faster alternative, but also more efficient. Despite the vWii Decaffinator guide down below is made appositally to make vWii Decaffeinator work with no problems (and you can use it without any problem if you'll need to) vWii Compat Title Installer only fixes the singular things that are really broken. That's also a faster way to fix your vWii.
In my case, I had to forcefully use vWii Decaffeinator because the problem that there was on my vWii (freezed when I went into Wii SD save data for a corruption because to restore my vWii I firstly put an American vWii NAND and then region-changed it, all with vWii NAND Restorer, because I didn't know how to use vWii Decaffeinator properly back then, but then fixed permanently this error by using properly vWii Decaffeinator with no errors by following a correct guide that now I'm reporting here, that actually works) couldn't be fixed by using vWii Compat Title Installer, because it was an invisible error that even tools didn't notice, but this is a really rare case. In most cases it's better (unless you did something like I did with my vWii NAND in the past) to use vWii Compat Title Installer.

REPAIRING SYSTEM TITLES (THEMES, IOS BRICK)
If you have modified system themes or an IOS (especially IOS80) and your vWii bricked, follow these steps:
1. After you've installed the latest version of vWii Compat Title Installer, Launch the app and select Decaf Menu (Reinstall & Wipe).
2. Select Scan and Restore System. The tool will scan for modified, corrupt, or missing system titles and prompt you to reinstall them.
3. If deviations are found, select the titles you want to restore and press ⊕ to confirm. Please note that:
TIP: If you know exactly which title caused the brick, you can reinstall it directly without running a full scan by choosing Reinstall System Titles (NUS) from the Decaf Menu.
REPAIRING VWII BY A BANNER BRICK
1. After you've installed the latest version of vWii Compat Title Installer, Launch the app and select Decaf Menu (Reinstall & Wipe).
2. Navigate to Delete Titles → Installed Channels (WiiWare, VC, Custom Channels)
3. Select the channel or title you installed most recently and delete it.
IF THESE OPTIONS DOESN'T HELP (FULL WIPE OPTIONS)
If other methods fail, you can perform a wipe and reinstall:
1. Launch Compat Installer and open Decaf Menu (Reinstall & Wipe).
2. Choose one of the wipe options:
RESTORING YOUR VWII BY USING VWII DECAFFEINATOR
IMPORTANT PREREQUISITES & WARNINGS
STEP 1: PREPARE THE SD CARD & VWII DECAFFEINATOR
1. Download the latest .wuhb version of vWii Decaffeinator here: https://github.com/LopezTutoriales/vWii-Decaffeinator-wuhb/releases/latest (so do not use the old .rpx version and use this wuhb version instead).
2. Connect your SD card to your PC.
3. Move the decaffeinator.wuhb file inside the sd:/wiiu/apps/ folder.
4. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U.
STEP 2: UNBLOCK SYSTEM UPDATES
1. Turn on your Wii U while holding the ⊕ button on your GamePad/Controller to access the Environment Loader menu.
2. Look at the bottom of the screen. If it says Updates Blocked, press ⊕ and ⊖ together until it changes to Updates Not Blocked.
3. Highlight Wii U Menu, press Ⓨ to set it as default Autoboot (the text will turn yellow), then press Ⓐ to boot into the menu.
4. (Optional) If a prompt appears warning you that an update folder exists, skip or dismiss it.
STEP 3: CONFIGURE FTPIIU & RUN DECAFFEINATOR
1. Crucial Fix: If Decaffeinator gives you a "Failed to mount..." error, return to the Wii U Menu. Open the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to FALSE.
2. Launch vWii Decaffeinator from your Wii U Menu.
3. If you suspect your vWii brick was caused recently by installing a corrupted channel (WAD file) or a bad channel banner, you don't necessarily have to wipe everything. In vWii Decaffeinator, you can select Light Mode. It will only delete and rebuild the core vWii system files, but it will preserve your save files and installed homebrew channels (you'll always have to update your console just like Aggressive Mode). You could also wipe out or fix a single channel or an IOS by using Advanced options. If Light Mode or Advanced options doesn't fix the issue, you can always go back and run the process again. Select Aggressive Mode. This will safely wipe your corrupted vWii NAND. Confirm and bypass the warning by pressing ⊕.
4. Once finished (either by using Light mode or Aggressive Mode or Advanced Options), the app will automatically redirect you to System Settings. Do not update yet! Exit the System Settings and return to the Wii U Menu.
ADDITIONAL STEP FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE ISFSHAX INSTALLED
Before you proceed to step 4 (disabling Aroma Autoboot), you need to delete some files from your SD Card and your Wii U NAND, otherwise the Wii U will not update:
On your SD Card, backup these files in a folder on your computer and then delete them. The files are found in:
In your Wii U menu, open the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to TRUE. This is crucial to make ftpiiu work again (as you'll have to use it).
In your Wii U NAND (by using FTPiiu), backup these files in a folder on your computer and then delete them. The files are found in:
Now that you have backed up and deleted these files, in your Wii U menu, open again the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to FALSE (otherwise the update won't work). Now you can proceed to step 4.
STEP 4: DISABLE AROMA AUTOBOOT TEMPORARILY
1. Open the Payload-Loader Installer app from your Wii U Menu.
2. Select Check → Boot Options.
3. Select Switch back to Wii U Menu.
4. Pay attention: near this option it says that this option could make the Wii U unusable if there's anything modified (for example a custom theme installed) but this option is safe. After that, press Ⓐ to shut down the console.
STEP 5: REINSTALL THE VWII NAND VIA SYSTEM UPDATE
1. Turn on your console normally (it will boot into standard stock firmware without Aroma).
2. Go to System Settings → System Update.
3. Start the update. The console will realize the vWii partition is missing and will safely download and install a fresh, clean vWii NAND. This process takes about 10–20 minutes.
4. Once completed, reboot and test your vWii channel to ensure it functions perfectly.
STEP 6: RE-ENABLE AROMA AUTOBOOT
After you have verified the vWii perfectly works, it is now time to turn back to the Autoboot.
1. Launch the Health and Safety app (or your entry point, so in the normal Wii U Menu) to trigger Aroma.
2. Once it loads, open Payload-Loader Installer again.
3. Go to Check → Boot Options → Switch to Payload-Loader.
4. Press Ⓐ to shut down.
5. Turn on the console, hold ⊕, and use the ⊕ and ⊖ combo to Block Updates again so your console stays safe.
ADDITIONAL STEP FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE ISFSHAX
For isfshax users now it's time to restore the files we've deleted earlier.
On your SD Card, put again the files you've saved in the folder of your computer. You have to put the two files in:
In your Wii U menu, open again the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to TRUE (to make ftpiiu work).
In your Wii U NAND (by using FTPiiu), restore these files in the NAND that you've saved in the folder of your computer and put them in:
You have now restored the main isfshax files.
(Optional but recommended): Now, for the last time, after you turn back to the Wii U menu, open again the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to FALSE.
Your original vWii is now fully restored and clean! You can now put again any external USB Drive or Wii disk. Don't forget to make a NAND backup with nanddumper (by backing up SLCCMPT) now that it is working properly, so you won't have to do all this process again.
If you have isfshax installed and can't make a backup by using nanddumper, that's normal. You can use the menu Minute if isfshax to backup your vWii NAND (that is always SLCCMPT).
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR NAND BACKUP IF YOU HAVE ONE IN CASE YOUR VWII BRICKS AGAIN
IMPORTANT: before restoring your vWii NAND Backup, try to use vWii Compat Title Installer to fix a single problem rather than losing time on this process.
NOTE: as vWii NAND Restorer is an .elf file, you'll need to run it through Tiramisu environment. If you don't have it, install the Tiramisu environment here: https://tiramisu.foryour.cafe/
In case your vWii bricks again, to reinstall the nand backup you'll need a tool called vWii NAND Restorer. Follow these steps:
1. Download the .elf file of vWii NAND Restorer here: https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/vWii-NAND-Restorer
2. Connect your SD card to your PC.
3. Create a folder named "vwiinandrestorer" in sd:/wiiu/apps/
4. Place the .elf file of vWii NAND Restorer you've just downloaded on sd:/wiiu/apps/vwiinandrestorer
5. Place your slccmpt.bin backup in sd:/vwiinandrestorer/slccmpt.bin
6. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U.
7. Before going to vWii NAND Restorer, we first have to disable ftpiiu. Start your console with Aroma, open the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to FALSE.
8. Now turn off your Wii U console and now turn it on again
9. While you turn on your console, press the Ⓧ button, so that you can choose the environment
10. Select Tiramisu. It will load into the homebrew menu
11. Go to vWii NAND Restorer
12. Choose the Restore NAND option. This will replace your broken NAND with your backup. This way, your vWii got restored
13. Turn back to vWii NAND Restorer and select the option fix modes (necessary after you've restored your vWii NAND). After it finishes, go to exit.
Now you can turn back to Aroma
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR NAND BACKUP IF YOU HAVE ONE IN CASE YOUR VWII BRICKS AGAIN (ISFSHAX)
IMPORTANT: before restoring your vWii NAND Backup, try to use vWii Compat Title Installer to fix a single problem rather than losing time on this process.
For people who have Isfshax, it isn't necessary to swap to another environment. You have to open the Minute menu. To do that, follow these steps (if you have patched iOS into your SD Card):
1. Connect your SD card to your PC.
2. Cut and paste these two files in a folder on your PC sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/wafel_payloader.ipx
sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/5payldr.ipx
3. If your NAND backup is not in your SD Card but in a computer folder, just drag your SLCCMPT.RAW file into your SD card (into sd:/)
4. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U.
5. When you boot on, you'll see the Minute Menu (the Gamepad won't turn on. You have to turn on your TV). Just press the POWER Button on your Wii U Console.
6. Now that you're in the main menu, press POWER 9 times. You shall be on the option "Backup and Restore". Now press EJECT.
7. After that, press POWER 12 times. You shall be on the option "Restore SLCCMPT.RAW". Now press EJECT and your vWii NAND will be restored.
8. After it finishes, press POWER 27 times. You shall be on the option "Return to Main Menu". Press EJECT to turn back.
9. After you turn back to the Main Menu, press POWER 16 times and press EJECT to turn off the console.
10. Now we have to put the two isfshax files back where they were. Take off the SD Card from the Wii U console
11. On your SD Card, put again the files you've saved in the folder of your computer. You have to put the two files in:
sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/wafel_payloader.ipx
sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/5payldr.ipx
12. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U. Now it shall autoboot again into the Wii U menu
NOTE: If it brings you to the Minute Menu instead, after you press POWER once, press POWER two times. You shall be on the option "Patch (sd) and boot IOS (slc)". Now press EJECT. It may also give you an error, and that's normal. press POWER 16 times and press EJECT to turn off the console. When you turn it on (either by pressing the Console's POWER button or the Wii U Gamepad's POWER button) it shall redirect you to the Wii U Menu.

- Full Wipe & Reinstall: Completely erases SLCCMPT (including all user purchases and save data) and reinstalls a pristine stock vWii environment from NUS.
RESTORING YOUR VWII BY USING VWII DECAFFEINATOR
IMPORTANT PREREQUISITES & WARNINGS- Remove all Wii Discs & USB Devices: Eject any game disc and unplug all external hard drives/flash drives before starting. Leave only your SD card inserted.
- System Version: Your Wii U must already be on the latest firmware (5.5.5 or 5.5.6, depending on the region) and running the Aroma custom firmware.
- Theme Warning: Ensure you are using the default, stock Wii U menu theme. If you have custom themes installed (via Utheme, etc.), remove them first to avoid a console freeze.
- Internet Connection: A stable Wi-Fi connection is required on your Wii U to download the fresh vWii files.

1. Launch the Health and Safety app (or your entry point, so in the normal Wii U Menu) to trigger Aroma.
2. Once it loads, open Payload-Loader Installer again.
3. Go to Check → Boot Options → Switch to Payload-Loader.
4. Press Ⓐ to shut down.
5. Turn on the console, hold ⊕, and use the ⊕ and ⊖ combo to Block Updates again so your console stays safe.
ADDITIONAL STEP FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE ISFSHAX
For isfshax users now it's time to restore the files we've deleted earlier.
On your SD Card, put again the files you've saved in the folder of your computer. You have to put the two files in:
- sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/wafel_payloader.ipx
- sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/5payldr.ipx
In your Wii U menu, open again the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to TRUE (to make ftpiiu work).
In your Wii U NAND (by using FTPiiu), restore these files in the NAND that you've saved in the folder of your computer and put them in:
- slc:/sys/hax/ios_plugins/wafel_payloader.ipx
- slc:/sys/hax/ios_plugins/5payldr.ipx
You have now restored the main isfshax files.
(Optional but recommended): Now, for the last time, after you turn back to the Wii U menu, open again the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to FALSE.
Your original vWii is now fully restored and clean! You can now put again any external USB Drive or Wii disk. Don't forget to make a NAND backup with nanddumper (by backing up SLCCMPT) now that it is working properly, so you won't have to do all this process again.
If you have isfshax installed and can't make a backup by using nanddumper, that's normal. You can use the menu Minute if isfshax to backup your vWii NAND (that is always SLCCMPT).
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR NAND BACKUP IF YOU HAVE ONE IN CASE YOUR VWII BRICKS AGAIN
IMPORTANT: before restoring your vWii NAND Backup, try to use vWii Compat Title Installer to fix a single problem rather than losing time on this process.
NOTE: as vWii NAND Restorer is an .elf file, you'll need to run it through Tiramisu environment. If you don't have it, install the Tiramisu environment here: https://tiramisu.foryour.cafe/
In case your vWii bricks again, to reinstall the nand backup you'll need a tool called vWii NAND Restorer. Follow these steps:
1. Download the .elf file of vWii NAND Restorer here: https://github.com/GaryOderNichts/vWii-NAND-Restorer
2. Connect your SD card to your PC.
3. Create a folder named "vwiinandrestorer" in sd:/wiiu/apps/
4. Place the .elf file of vWii NAND Restorer you've just downloaded on sd:/wiiu/apps/vwiinandrestorer
5. Place your slccmpt.bin backup in sd:/vwiinandrestorer/slccmpt.bin
6. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U.
7. Before going to vWii NAND Restorer, we first have to disable ftpiiu. Start your console with Aroma, open the Aroma WUT Connect menu via the button combo (L + Down D-Pad + Minus). Go to ftpiiu → set Allow access to system files to FALSE.
8. Now turn off your Wii U console and now turn it on again
9. While you turn on your console, press the Ⓧ button, so that you can choose the environment
10. Select Tiramisu. It will load into the homebrew menu
11. Go to vWii NAND Restorer
12. Choose the Restore NAND option. This will replace your broken NAND with your backup. This way, your vWii got restored
13. Turn back to vWii NAND Restorer and select the option fix modes (necessary after you've restored your vWii NAND). After it finishes, go to exit.
Now you can turn back to Aroma
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR NAND BACKUP IF YOU HAVE ONE IN CASE YOUR VWII BRICKS AGAIN (ISFSHAX)
IMPORTANT: before restoring your vWii NAND Backup, try to use vWii Compat Title Installer to fix a single problem rather than losing time on this process.
For people who have Isfshax, it isn't necessary to swap to another environment. You have to open the Minute menu. To do that, follow these steps (if you have patched iOS into your SD Card):
1. Connect your SD card to your PC.
2. Cut and paste these two files in a folder on your PC sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/wafel_payloader.ipx
sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/5payldr.ipx
3. If your NAND backup is not in your SD Card but in a computer folder, just drag your SLCCMPT.RAW file into your SD card (into sd:/)
4. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U.
5. When you boot on, you'll see the Minute Menu (the Gamepad won't turn on. You have to turn on your TV). Just press the POWER Button on your Wii U Console.
6. Now that you're in the main menu, press POWER 9 times. You shall be on the option "Backup and Restore". Now press EJECT.
7. After that, press POWER 12 times. You shall be on the option "Restore SLCCMPT.RAW". Now press EJECT and your vWii NAND will be restored.
8. After it finishes, press POWER 27 times. You shall be on the option "Return to Main Menu". Press EJECT to turn back.
9. After you turn back to the Main Menu, press POWER 16 times and press EJECT to turn off the console.
10. Now we have to put the two isfshax files back where they were. Take off the SD Card from the Wii U console
11. On your SD Card, put again the files you've saved in the folder of your computer. You have to put the two files in:
sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/wafel_payloader.ipx
sd:/wiiu/ios_plugins/5payldr.ipx
12. Safely eject the SD card and put it back into your Wii U. Now it shall autoboot again into the Wii U menu
NOTE: If it brings you to the Minute Menu instead, after you press POWER once, press POWER two times. You shall be on the option "Patch (sd) and boot IOS (slc)". Now press EJECT. It may also give you an error, and that's normal. press POWER 16 times and press EJECT to turn off the console. When you turn it on (either by pressing the Console's POWER button or the Wii U Gamepad's POWER button) it shall redirect you to the Wii U Menu.
Hope this guide helps the people who are trying to get their vWii back.
