unbanning proton mail?

Hi, i just created this account, but i had to use some random gmail from oomf because i couldnt use my actual email, which is proton mail, since i get "The email address you entered has been banned by the administrator. Please try another.", is there any chance to get proton mail unbanned?

There's a reason why anonymous e-mail providers have been banned, and that is because of spam bots and also those who are willing to go under alt accounts after they've been banned for justified reasons. Try a different e-mail provider (avoid the ones that generate a temporary e-mail, for one, because you'll lose it, and you'll have a high chance of being on the blacklist).

when I signed up for my data hoster, it rejected my primary request.
After asking em they said "we don't do business with people who sign up with protonmail, please use another email adress"

If it's with companies, they do it because they want to harvest as much data from it alone. You can't even make an account on any of the big social media platforms or even GitHub of all places.

Yeah. Good reason I only use Lemmy/Feddit aswell as Akkoma nowadays.
Can even selfhost.

Flip modern data extraction harvest companies.

Evne ISPs and your medical aswell as credit companies are involved.

Don't you think that a site that's been around over 20 years prolly had a really good reason to ban that site in the first place and isn't likely to revisit the decision, also for a good reason? (Spoiler alert: Proton mail is what the worst offending spambots use to try to get access to this site in order to spam the hell out of us. Banning such addresses dropped the amount of spambots dramatically. Unbanning would create unnecessary work for admins fighting spam.)

FYI, Proton Mail supports Gmail connections, so you could set up a dummy Google account for such cases and still use your normal e-mail address:

As for you can do in this situation, there are multiple lists online where you can find other privacy-respecting providers, including Proton itself, of course.

As for this particular measure, without calling anyone out, I strongly disapprove of it! Not only does this limit actual well-meaning users' access to the forum, but with the nature of some discussions, it should be in everyone's interests to support user privacy, and not require the user to figure out what provider isn't banned just to give up and use something like Gmail, which is literally panopticon.

I realise I have zero privilege over moderation and any high-level decision-making, but moving the responsibility of fighting spam (in this case, alternative accounts, etc.) to the email provider is a fool's game. In the long run, it could cause smaller, trustworthy providers who don't unnecessarily check or collect anything to be on the chopping block as soon as one person starts using it to create multiple accounts.

Sure, Proton is pretty large nowadays, but even then, if I were going to become a new user and only used a Proton address, I wouldn't bother registering.


Edit: Considering the language used on the registration modal, is the "ban" mentioned previously meant to be the "additional verification" procedure?

If you would be responsible for swifting lists of those people day after day for little to no compensation, you would quickly change your mind or give up. And because of giving up, you got those massive spam threads not so long ago.

This forum has no interest in supporting privacy at the cost of never ending spam.

I didn't mean to suggest there were no other means of controlling this, not limited to invites-based system where obvious offenders could easily have all their offsprings removed in one fell swoop.

But I realise that there are waning examples of any alternative measures taking place on the Internet, and it may be too late to implement any on this forum. It's quite big already. Size is very much a problem for independent platforms...
