Ocarina of Time 3D gets huge mod to enable single-screen play

Ocarina of Time is back in style as the upcoming Switch 2 remake looms on the horizon. But what's a fan of the game to do over the next few months? If you've been fancying a replay of the landmark title and have been going between which version to pick up, this new mod might just turn you towards the 3DS version. Released a few days ago, the Single Screen Experience mod does what it says on the tin, migrating the game's UI to the top screen.

Though this mod is aimed at those playing via emulation, with it making the game much more approachable on more traditional handhelds, it is entirely compatible with original hardware. On top of the UI elements being moved to the top screen, the mod also makes use of the D-Pad, ZL, and ZR buttons for item mapping. Not to mention enabling the right stick for a free camera much like what we saw in Majora's Mask 3D.

Those interested in trying the mod for themselves can find it linked below.

Would you feel the same about a mod that made Wii Sports playable with a GameCube controller so disabled people could enjoy it, but was fundamentally the same mod as the one for "couch potatos"
it's best if you don't take anything Chibi says seriously lol

What a useless mod! It's like modding Wii Sports so it can be played on a GameCube controller by couch potatos. It's a 3D, dual screen game meant for unique hardware. This just turns a great game and a unique experience into a run-of-the-mill Zelda hack.
I'm not primarily here to join the dogpile, I'm here to grind an even older axe.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Modding Wii Sports to use a different controller as you say changes the gameplay experience. This mod changes the visual experience (also the buttons but you're talking about the visual part). I think gameplay mods are inherently more valuable/worthy than visual mods.

Admittedly, it is hard to understand what merits the "unique experience" of having the UI on the bottom screen instead of the top screen. You're defending a rerelease against a QoL mod. Your argument is a lot more applicable to say, modding skyward sword for a gamecube controller particularly because (oh look, me) it would require diminishing the gameplay.

My actual tirade today is the ridiculous unnecessary waste that OoT 3D existing in the first place is. I watched the video so I could see the stupid flowers sticking up on Hyrule Field during the title screen. The garish added gold really detracts from settings I remember well from the N64 original. It's like they forgot that the bright colors of Majora's Mask were intended to convey horror, which is what I feel seeing borderline neon shit in Ocarina of Time.

I remember this mistake as the start of Nintendo's enormous waste of development resources (even third party resources) in remaking their best games for rerelease. The correct mode for this - I'm not saying rereleases are bad - is slap an emulator on it and make minimal changes, like the Gamecube's Master Quest release of Ocarina of Time. Same graphic resources, bare basic UI changes to match the Gamecube controller, and new goddamn gameplay content in Master Quest. Probably less development resources made Master Quest than made OoT 3D.

I'm not saying Nintendo is what it used to be, but imagine what their money and resources could been used to make in the absence of Past Better Zelda Game HD/3D 3, of which we've had at least a half dozen now. These games are the 'Disney live action remakes' of video games. Just tragic.

I want to see Ship of Harkinian get VR support...
You can play it in VR if you use Dolphin VR and Virtual Console. It’s not very good though.

What does work quite well, though, is SoH and Geo11 mod. It’s not VR, but it is 3D, and you can use any mods compatible with SoH. In fact, Geo11 mod works on all the Harbor Master ports.

What a great mod! I can see this mod being useful on a TV setup in my living room. I wonder if other 3DS games can follow suit as it allows a better experience for TV console play. Thank you rlgcarrot!

What a stupid thing to say.
He's always like that. Put him on the ignore list and go on with the day. The more attention he gets, the more stuff he does like this. We got a bunch of trolls here on the forum. Been lurking here for many years.

Now that this single screen mod for 3ds ocarina of time is a thing now which way is better to play this game? 3ds ocarina of time or ship of harkanian with the 3ds graphics textures pack?

That is quite the arrogance, my friend.
I would love to hear your explanation as to how my open acknowledgement of a character flaw I've had for 30+ years constitutes "arrogance"

Now that I think of it, are you messing with me? I'm finding myself unable to stop engaging with your bad opinion
