Super Duper Paper Mario gets v1.1.0 update, adds turn-based battles to Chapter 2

Originally being added to the Flipside Mod Manager last year, Super Duper Paper Mario aimed to add turn-based battles to popular Wii title. Though only updating the first chapter at the time, it was well-received and had fans excited for future chapters to be adapted. As of a few weeks ago, the mod has been updated to include Chapter 2, with new turn-based combat mechanics added for Peach to differentiate her from Mario.

Beyond this, Chapter 1 has seen a number of balance changes and fixes, alongside new badge menu assets, new battle music, and a prologue skip. Those interested in trying this for themselves can find the release page below.

i love having different options even if some people dont want turned based battles its an extra option that was never there. if you dont like it you dont have to play it that way but for people who do like turn based battles it gives them a whole new world to enjoy.

I just want to reiterate what the first poster said, how it is really very impressive.

I never gave this game a fair shake. I think i enjoyed it, but then I hit a town and had to explore to find my way like a normal RPG and the genre switch turned me off. That was a long time ago now so maybe I should try again, though tbh, I have never managed to play the GC one either, despite throwing it on my Steam Deck when I first got it many years ago.

I have always had a weird relationship with RPGs, probably a result of being a Pokémon child first and foremost.

thats actually really neat!
tho i must admit, while nothing like the real paper mario games, i DID actually enjoy this one.
it was funny and innovative at least.
but then, you know, came "Sticker Star" and killed every little bit of joy i ever felt about that series.

super mario paper is really interesting to me. it's got that pc adventure game vibe to it, but its not straight froward at all.
do people have a recommended game pad dolphin setup for it ?

what was wrong with sticker star. I loved it as a kid. I think it was my first paper mario game.

thats precisely it.
it offers no challenge whatsoever for an adult.
some games are really fun as kids, but less so for adults.
the entire mechanic around simply using stickers for battles were a bit simplistic.
they gave you the stickers and you then used these stickers in the battles to win the fights.
once you figured out that nintendo gave you exactly the items needed to win the fight BEFORE the fight, it becomes quite boring.
Theres very little freedom of choice involved, everything is pre-programmed and pre-arranged.

i didnt enjoy the new paper mario games much either, since they didnt feature Turnbased-battles but at least they had some sort of puzzle mechanics that COULD at times, be fun, like the origami one.

but, of course, tastes do differ.

(Assuming Xbox layout)
2 > A
1 > X
Shake > Right Trigger or X
A > B
IR > Right stick

Though I fundamentally disagree with changing to rpg type battles in this game as the platformer elements are a part of the charm, if it means more people giving the story of this game a fair chance I suppose it's a net positive. (This might actually be the best written Mario game out there btw.)

Also this is relevant (and real, I absolutely adore the jokes in this game)

Super Paper Mario is overhyped, I remember being so excited to play it bc I heard so many good things about but the reality about this game is just going through mind-numingly boring 2d levels with extremely mediocre combat sprinkled between and then getting rewarded one to two sentences of boring backstory/lore at the end of each chapter.

But anyways this mod sounds interesting at least.

There’s a mod for this game?

YOU TAKE THAT BACK

I LEARNED WHAT THE MEANING OF LOVE IS BECAUSE OF THIS

Finally, the gameplay Super Paper Mario always deserved. It’s wild that modders are doing what we’ve been begging Nintendo to do for nearly 20 years.

Then after this you had sticker star and that was the death of this whole series

Wish they never went away from a winning formula
my friend who is someone who rarely gets angry at any video games, loathes sticker star with a burning passion it's crazy.

i never played it but if he of all people despises it, it's gotta be bad

Blasphemy!

I love this game because of the non turn based battles. I wish that could be applied to the other paper mario games then I'd be interested!

I'm sure people will love this but turn based? 🤮
I haven't played it in years. I definitely think that Sticker Star would benefit from traditional turn-based battles. I didn't play Color Splash, or Origami King, but I do own the latter.
